New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
Meanwhile, Absalom and his men arrived at Jerusalem, accompanied by Ahithophel. 15 Meanwhile, Absalom and all the men of Israel came to Jerusalem, and Ahithophel was with him.
When David's friend Hushai the Arkite arrived, he went immediately to see Absalom. "Long live the king!" he exclaimed. "Long live the king!" 16 Then Hushai the Arkite, David's friend, went to Absalom and said to him, "Long live the king! Long live the king!"
"Is this the way you treat your friend David?" Absalom asked him. "Why aren't you with him?" 17 Absalom asked Hushai, "Is this the love you show your friend? Why didn't you go with your friend?"
"I'm here because I work for the man who is chosen by the LORD and by Israel," Hushai replied. 18 Hushai said to Absalom, "No, the one chosen by the LORD, by these people, and by all the men of Israel--his I will be, and I will remain with him.
"And anyway, why shouldn't I serve you? I helped your father, and now I will help you!" 19 Furthermore, whom should I serve? Should I not serve the son? Just as I served your father, so I will serve you."
Then Absalom turned to Ahithophel and asked him, "What should I do next?" 20 Absalom said to Ahithophel, "Give us your advice. What should we do?"
Ahithophel told him, "Go and sleep with your father's concubines, for he has left them here to keep the house. Then all Israel will know that you have insulted him beyond hope of reconciliation, and they will give you their support." 21 Ahithophel answered, "Lie with your father's concubines whom he left to take care of the palace. Then all Israel will hear that you have made yourself a stench in your father's nostrils, and the hands of everyone with you will be strengthened."
So they set up a tent on the palace roof where everyone could see it, and Absalom went into the tent to sleep with his father's concubines. 22 So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof, and he lay with his father's concubines in the sight of all Israel.
Absalom followed Ahithophel's advice, just as David had done. For every word Ahithophel spoke seemed as wise as though it had come directly from the mouth of God. 23 Now in those days the advice Ahithophel gave was like that of one who inquires of God. That was how both David and Absalom regarded all of Ahithophel's advice.
