Ecclesiastes 10

NIRV

NIV

1 Dead flies give perfume a bad smell. And a little foolishness can make a lot of wisdom useless.
1 As dead flies give perfume a bad smell, so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor.
2 The hearts of wise people lead them on the right path. But the hearts of foolish people take them down the wrong path.
2 The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left.
3 A foolish person doesn't have any sense at all. He shows everyone he is foolish. He does it even when he is walking along the road.
3 Even as fools walk along the road, they lack sense and show everyone how stupid they are.
4 Suppose a ruler gets very angry with you. If he does, don't quit your job in the palace. Stay calm. That will overcome the effects of your big mistakes.
4 If a ruler’s anger rises against you, do not leave your post; calmness can lay great offenses to rest.
5 Here's something evil I've seen on this earth. And it's the kind of mistake that rulers make.
5 There is an evil I have seen under the sun, the sort of error that arises from a ruler:
6 Foolish people are given many important jobs. Rich people are given unimportant ones.
6 Fools are put in many high positions, while the rich occupy the low ones.
7 I've seen slaves on horseback. I've also seen princes who were forced to walk as if they were slaves.
7 I have seen slaves on horseback, while princes go on foot like slaves.
8 Anyone who digs a pit might fall into it. Anyone who breaks through a wall might be bitten by a snake.
8 Whoever digs a pit may fall into it; whoever breaks through a wall may be bitten by a snake.
9 Anyone who removes stones from rock pits might get hurt. Anyone who cuts logs might get wounded.
9 Whoever quarries stones may be injured by them; whoever splits logs may be endangered by them.
10 Suppose the blade of an ax is dull. And its edge hasn't been sharpened. Then more effort is needed to use it. But skill will bring success.
10 If the ax is dull and its edge unsharpened, more strength is needed, but skill will bring success.
11 Suppose a snake bites before it is charmed. Then there isn't any benefit in being a snake charmer.
11 If a snake bites before it is charmed, the charmer receives no fee.
12 A man who is wise says gracious things. But a foolish person is destroyed by what his own lips speak.
12 Words from the mouth of the wise are gracious, but fools are consumed by their own lips.
13 At first what he says is foolish. In the end his words are very evil.
13 At the beginning their words are folly; at the end they are wicked madness—
14 He talks too much. No one knows what lies ahead for him. Who can tell him what will happen after he is gone?
14 and fools multiply words. No one knows what is coming— who can tell someone else what will happen after them?
15 The work a foolish person does makes him tired. He doesn't even know the way to town.
15 The toil of fools wearies them; they do not know the way to town.
16 How terrible it is for a land whose king used to be a servant! How terrible if its princes get drunk in the morning!
16 Woe to the land whose king was a servantand whose princes feast in the morning.
17 How blessed is the land whose king was born into the royal family! How blessed if its princes eat and drink at the proper time! How blessed if they eat and drink to become strong and not to get drunk!
17 Blessed is the land whose king is of noble birth and whose princes eat at a proper time— for strength and not for drunkenness.
18 When a man won't work, the roof falls down. When his hands aren't busy, the house leaks.
18 Through laziness, the rafters sag; because of idle hands, the house leaks.
19 People laugh at a dinner party. And wine makes life happy. People think money can buy everything.
19 A feast is made for laughter, wine makes life merry, and money is the answer for everything.
20 Don't call down curses on the king. Don't even think about doing it. Don't call down curses on rich people. Don't even do it in your bedroom. A bird might fly away and carry your words. It might report what you said.
20 Do not revile the king even in your thoughts, or curse the rich in your bedroom, because a bird in the sky may carry your words, and a bird on the wing may report what you say.
