New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
Then Job spoke again: 1 Then Job replied:
"I have heard all this before. What miserable comforters you are! 2 "I have heard many things like these; miserable comforters are you all!
Won't you ever stop your flow of foolish words? What have I said that makes you speak so endlessly? 3 Will your long-winded speeches never end? What ails you that you keep on arguing?
I could say the same things if you were in my place. I could spout off my criticisms against you and shake my head at you. 4 I also could speak like you, if you were in my place; I could make fine speeches against you and shake my head at you.
But that's not what I would do. I would speak in a way that helps you. I would try to take away your grief. 5 But my mouth would encourage you; comfort from my lips would bring you relief.
But as it is, my grief remains no matter how I defend myself. And it does not help if I refuse to speak." 6 "Yet if I speak, my pain is not relieved; and if I refrain, it does not go away.
"O God, you have ground me down and devastated my family. 7 Surely, O God, you have worn me out; you have devastated my entire household.
You have reduced me to skin and bones -- as proof, they say, of my sins. 8 You have bound me--and it has become a witness; my gauntness rises up and testifies against me.
God hates me and tears angrily at my flesh. He gnashes his teeth at me and pierces me with his eyes. 9 God assails me and tears me in his anger and gnashes his teeth at me; my opponent fastens on me his piercing eyes.
People jeer and laugh at me. They slap my cheek in contempt. A mob gathers against me. 10 Men open their mouths to jeer at me; they strike my cheek in scorn and unite together against me.
God has handed me over to sinners. He has tossed me into the hands of the wicked." 11 God has turned me over to evil men and thrown me into the clutches of the wicked.
"I was living quietly until he broke me apart. He took me by the neck and dashed me to pieces. Then he set me up as his target. 12 All was well with me, but he shattered me; he seized me by the neck and crushed me. He has made me his target;
His archers surrounded me, and his arrows pierced me without mercy. The ground is wet with my blood. 13 his archers surround me. Without pity, he pierces my kidneys and spills my gall on the ground.
Again and again he smashed me, charging at me like a warrior. 14 Again and again he bursts upon me; he rushes at me like a warrior.
Here I sit in sackcloth. I have surrendered, and I sit in the dust. 15 "I have sewed sackcloth over my skin and buried my brow in the dust.
My eyes are red with weeping; darkness covers my eyes. 16 My face is red with weeping, deep shadows ring my eyes;
Yet I am innocent, and my prayer is pure." 17 yet my hands have been free of violence and my prayer is pure.
"O earth, do not conceal my blood. Let it cry out on my behalf. 18 "O earth, do not cover my blood; may my cry never be laid to rest!
Even now my witness is in heaven. My advocate is there on high. 19 Even now my witness is in heaven; my advocate is on high.
My friends scorn me, but I pour out my tears to God. 20 My intercessor is my friend as my eyes pour out tears to God;
Oh, that someone would mediate between God and me, as a person mediates between friends. 21 on behalf of a man he pleads with God as a man pleads for his friend.
For soon I must go down that road from which I will never return." 22 "Only a few years will pass before I go on the journey of no return.
