Revised Standard Version (RSV) New International Version (NIV)
My spirit is broken, my days are extinct, the grave is ready for me. 1 My spirit is broken, my days are cut short, the grave awaits me.
Surely there are mockers about me, and my eye dwells on their provocation. 2 Surely mockers surround me; my eyes must dwell on their hostility.
"Lay down a pledge for me with thyself; who is there that will give surety for me? 3 "Give me, O God, the pledge you demand. Who else will put up security for me?
Since thou hast closed their minds to understanding, therefore thou wilt not let them triumph. 4 You have closed their minds to understanding; therefore you will not let them triumph.
He who informs against his friends to get a share of their property, the eyes of his children will fail. 5 If a man denounces his friends for reward, the eyes of his children will fail.
"He has made me a byword of the peoples, and I am one before whom men spit. 6 "God has made me a byword to everyone, a man in whose face people spit.
My eye has grown dim from grief, and all my members are like a shadow. 7 My eyes have grown dim with grief; my whole frame is but a shadow.
Upright men are appalled at this, and the innocent stirs himself up against the godless. 8 Upright men are appalled at this; the innocent are aroused against the ungodly.
Yet the righteous holds to his way, and he that has clean hands grows stronger and stronger. 9 Nevertheless, the righteous will hold to their ways, and those with clean hands will grow stronger.
But you, come on again, all of you, and I shall not find a wise man among you. 10 "But come on, all of you, try again! I will not find a wise man among you.
My days are past, my plans are broken off, the desires of my heart. 11 My days have passed, my plans are shattered, and so are the desires of my heart.
They make night into day; 'The light,' they say, 'is near to the darkness.' 12 These men turn night into day; in the face of darkness they say, 'Light is near.'
If I look for Sheol as my house, if I spread my couch in darkness, 13 If the only home I hope for is the grave, if I spread out my bed in darkness,
if I say to the pit, 'You are my father,' and to the worm, 'My mother,' or 'My sister,' 14 if I say to corruption, 'You are my father,' and to the worm, 'My mother' or 'My sister,'
where then is my hope? Who will see my hope? 15 where then is my hope? Who can see any hope for me?
Will it go down to the bars of Sheol? Shall we descend together into the dust?" 16 Will it go down to the gates of death ? Will we descend together into the dust?"
