Then Job answered and said, 1 Then Job replied:
How long will ye vex my soul, And break me in pieces with words? 2 "How long will you torment me and crush me with words?
These ten times have ye reproached me: Ye are not ashamed that ye deal hardly with me. 3 Ten times now you have reproached me; shamelessly you attack me.
And be it indeed that I have erred, Mine error remaineth with myself. 4 If it is true that I have gone astray, my error remains my concern alone.
If indeed ye will magnify yourselves against me, And plead against me my reproach; 5 If indeed you would exalt yourselves above me and use my humiliation against me,
Know now that God hath subverted me [in my cause], And hath compassed me with his net. 6 then know that God has wronged me and drawn his net around me.
Behold, I cry out of wrong, but I am not heard: I cry for help, but there is no justice. 7 "Though I cry, 'I've been wronged!' I get no response; though I call for help, there is no justice.
He hath walled up my way that I cannot pass, And hath set darkness in my paths. 8 He has blocked my way so I cannot pass; he has shrouded my paths in darkness.
He hath stripped me of my glory, And taken the crown from my head. 9 He has stripped me of my honor and removed the crown from my head.
He hath broken me down on every side, and I am gone; And my hope hath he plucked up like a tree. 10 He tears me down on every side till I am gone; he uproots my hope like a tree.
He hath also kindled his wrath against me, And he counteth me unto him as [one of] his adversaries. 11 His anger burns against me; he counts me among his enemies.
His troops come on together, And cast up their way against me, And encamp round about my tent. 12 His troops advance in force; they build a siege ramp against me and encamp around my tent.
He hath put my brethren far from me, And mine acquaintance are wholly estranged from me. 13 "He has alienated my brothers from me; my acquaintances are completely estranged from me.
My kinsfolk have failed, And my familiar friends have forgotten me. 14 My kinsmen have gone away; my friends have forgotten me.
They that dwell in my house, and my maids, count me for a stranger; I am an alien in their sight. 15 My guests and my maidservants count me a stranger; they look upon me as an alien.
I call unto my servant, and he giveth me no answer, [Though] I entreat him with my mouth. 16 I summon my servant, but he does not answer, though I beg him with my own mouth.
My breath is strange to my wife, And my supplication to the children of mine own mother. 17 My breath is offensive to my wife; I am loathsome to my own brothers.
Even young children despise me; If I arise, they speak against me. 18 Even the little boys scorn me; when I appear, they ridicule me.
All my familiar friends abhor me, And they whom I loved are turned against me. 19 All my intimate friends detest me; those I love have turned against me.
My bone cleaveth to my skin and to my flesh, And I am escaped with the skin of my teeth. 20 I am nothing but skin and bones; I have escaped with only the skin of my teeth.
Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O ye my friends; For the hand of God hath touched me. 21 "Have pity on me, my friends, have pity, for the hand of God has struck me.
Why do ye persecute me as God, And are not satisfied with my flesh? 22 Why do you pursue me as God does? Will you never get enough of my flesh?
Oh that my words were now written! Oh that they were inscribed in a book! 23 "Oh, that my words were recorded, that they were written on a scroll,
That with an iron pen and lead They were graven in the rock for ever! 24 that they were inscribed with an iron tool on lead, or engraved in rock forever!
But as for me I know that my Redeemer liveth, And at last he will stand up upon the earth: 25 I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth.
And after my skin, [even] this [body], is destroyed, Then without my flesh shall I see God; 26 And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God;
Whom I, even I, shall see, on my side, And mine eyes shall behold, and not as a stranger. My heart is consumed within me. 27 I myself will see him with my own eyes--I, and not another. How my heart yearns within me!
If ye say, How we will persecute him! And that the root of the matter is found in me; 28 "If you say, 'How we will hound him, since the root of the trouble lies in him, '
Be ye afraid of the sword: For wrath [bringeth] the punishments of the sword, That ye may know there is a judgment. 29 you should fear the sword yourselves; for wrath will bring punishment by the sword, and then you will know that there is judgment. "
