New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
"I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 1 "I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.
He cuts off every branch that doesn't produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.
You have already been pruned for greater fruitfulness by the message I have given you. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.
Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful apart from me. 4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
"Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. 5 "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.
Anyone who parts from me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned. 6 If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.
But if you stay joined to me and my words remain in you, you may ask any request you like, and it will be granted! 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you.
My true disciples produce much fruit. This brings great glory to my Father. 8 This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
"I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. 9 "As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.
When you obey me, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father and remain in his love. 10 If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love.
I have told you this so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow! 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.
I command you to love each other in the same way that I love you. 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.
And here is how to measure it -- the greatest love is shown when people lay down their lives for their friends. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.
You are my friends if you obey me. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command.
I no longer call you servants, because a master doesn't confide in his servants. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.
You didn't choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit--fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.
I command you to love each other. 17 This is my command: Love each other.
"When the world hates you, remember it hated me before it hated you. 18 "If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.
The world would love you if you belonged to it, but you don't. I chose you to come out of the world, and so it hates you. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.
Do you remember what I told you? 'A servant is not greater than the master.' Since they persecuted me, naturally they will persecute you. And if they had listened to me, they would listen to you! 20 Remember the words I spoke to you: 'No servant is greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also.
The people of the world will hate you because you belong to me, for they don't know God who sent me. 21 They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the One who sent me.
They would not be guilty if I had not come and spoken to them. But now they have no excuse for their sin. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. Now, however, they have no excuse for their sin.
Anyone who hates me hates my Father, too. 23 He who hates me hates my Father as well.
If I hadn't done such miraculous signs among them that no one else could do, they would not be counted guilty. But as it is, they saw all that I did and yet hated both of us -- me and my Father. 24 If I had not done among them what no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have seen these miracles, and yet they have hated both me and my Father.
This has fulfilled what the Scriptures said: 'They hated me without cause.' 25 But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: 'They hated me without reason.'
"But I will send you the Counselor -- the Spirit of truth. He will come to you from the Father and will tell you all about me. 26 "When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me.
And you must also tell others about me because you have been with me from the beginning. 27 And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.
