Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 1 The LORD said to Moses,
Avenge the children of Israel of the Midianites: afterward you shall be gathered to your people. 2 "Take vengeance on the Midianites for the Israelites. After that, you will be gathered to your people."
Moses spoke to the people, saying, Arm you men from among you for the war, that they may go against Midian, to execute Yahweh's vengeance on Midian. 3 So Moses said to the people, "Arm some of your men to go to war against the Midianites and to carry out the LORD's vengeance on them.
Of every tribe one thousand, throughout all the tribes of Israel, shall you send to the war. 4 Send into battle a thousand men from each of the tribes of Israel."
So there were delivered, out of the thousands of Israel, a thousand of every tribe, twelve thousand armed for war. 5 So twelve thousand men armed for battle, a thousand from each tribe, were supplied from the clans of Israel.
Moses sent them, one thousand of every tribe, to the war, them and Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, to the war, with the vessels of the sanctuary and the trumpets for the alarm in his hand. 6 Moses sent them into battle, a thousand from each tribe, along with Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, who took with him articles from the sanctuary and the trumpets for signaling.
They warred against Midian, as Yahweh commanded Moses; and they killed every male. 7 They fought against Midian, as the LORD commanded Moses, and killed every man.
They killed the kings of Midian with the rest of their slain: Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian: Balaam also the son of Beor they killed with the sword. 8 Among their victims were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba--the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword.
The children of Israel took captive the women of Midian and their little ones; and all their cattle, and all their flocks, and all their goods, they took for a prey. 9 The Israelites captured the Midianite women and children and took all the Midianite herds, flocks and goods as plunder.
All their cities in the places in which they lived, and all their encampments, they burnt with fire. 10 They burned all the towns where the Midianites had settled, as well as all their camps.
They took all the spoil, and all the prey, both of man and of animal. 11 They took all the plunder and spoils, including the people and animals,
They brought the captives, and the prey, and the spoil, to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of the children of Israel, to the camp at the plains of Moab, which are by the Jordan at Jericho. 12 and brought the captives, spoils and plunder to Moses and Eleazar the priest and the Israelite assembly at their camp on the plains of Moab, by the Jordan across from Jericho.
Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and all the princes of the congregation, went forth to meet them outside of the camp. 13 Moses, Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the community went to meet them outside the camp.
Moses was angry with the officers of the host, the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds, who came from the service of the war. 14 Moses was angry with the officers of the army--the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds--who returned from the battle.
Moses said to them, Have you saved all the women alive? 15 "Have you allowed all the women to live?" he asked them.
Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against Yahweh in the matter of Peor, and so the plague was among the congregation of Yahweh. 16 "They were the ones who followed Balaam's advice and were the means of turning the Israelites away from the LORD in what happened at Peor, so that a plague struck the LORD's people.
Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man by lying with him. 17 Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man,
But all the girls, who have not known man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves. 18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.
Encamp you outside of the camp seven days: whoever has killed any person, and whoever has touched any slain, purify yourselves on the third day and on the seventh day, you and your captives. 19 "All of you who have killed anyone or touched anyone who was killed must stay outside the camp seven days. On the third and seventh days you must purify yourselves and your captives.
As to every garment, and all that is made of skin, and all work of goats' [hair], and all things made of wood, you shall purify yourselves. 20 Purify every garment as well as everything made of leather, goat hair or wood."
Eleazar the priest said to the men of war who went to the battle, This is the statute of the law which Yahweh has commanded Moses: 21 Then Eleazar the priest said to the soldiers who had gone into battle, "This is the requirement of the law that the LORD gave Moses:
however the gold, and the silver, the brass, the iron, the tin, and the lead, 22 Gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, lead
everything that may abide the fire, you shall make to go through the fire, and it shall be clean; nevertheless it shall be purified with the water for impurity: and all that doesn't withstand the fire you shall make to go through the water. 23 and anything else that can withstand fire must be put through the fire, and then it will be clean. But it must also be purified with the water of cleansing. And whatever cannot withstand fire must be put through that water.
You shall wash your clothes on the seventh day, and you shall be clean; and afterward you shall come into the camp. 24 On the seventh day wash your clothes and you will be clean. Then you may come into the camp."
Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 25 The LORD said to Moses,
Take the sum of the prey that was taken, both of man and of animal, you, and Eleazar the priest, and the heads of the fathers' [houses] of the congregation; 26 "You and Eleazar the priest and the family heads of the community are to count all the people and animals that were captured.
and divide the prey into two parts: between the men skilled in war, who went out to battle, and all the congregation. 27 Divide the spoils between the soldiers who took part in the battle and the rest of the community.
Levy a tribute to Yahweh of the men of war who went out to battle: one soul of five hundred, [both] of the persons, and of the oxen, and of the donkeys, and of the flocks: 28 From the soldiers who fought in the battle, set apart as tribute for the LORD one out of every five hundred, whether persons, cattle, donkeys, sheep or goats.
take it of their half, and give it to Eleazar the priest, for Yahweh's heave-offering. 29 Take this tribute from their half share and give it to Eleazar the priest as the LORD's part.
Of the children of Israel's half, you shall take one drawn out of every fifty, of the persons, of the oxen, of the donkeys, and of the flocks, [even] of all the cattle, and give them to the Levites, who keep the charge of the tent of Yahweh. 30 From the Israelites' half, select one out of every fifty, whether persons, cattle, donkeys, sheep, goats or other animals. Give them to the Levites, who are responsible for the care of the LORD's tabernacle."
Moses and Eleazar the priest did as Yahweh commanded Moses. 31 So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the LORD commanded Moses.
Now the prey, over and above the booty which the men of war took, was six hundred seventy-five thousand sheep, 32 The plunder remaining from the spoils that the soldiers took was 675,000 sheep,
and seventy-two thousand oxen, 33 72,000 cattle,
and seventy-one thousand donkeys, 34 61,000 donkeys
and thirty-two thousand persons in all, of the women who had not known man by lying with him. 35 and 32,000 women who had never slept with a man.
The half, which was the portion of those who went out to war, was in number three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep: 36 The half share of those who fought in the battle was:
and Yahweh's tribute of the sheep was six hundred seventy-five. 37 of which the tribute for the LORD was 675;
The oxen were thirty-six thousand; of which Yahweh's tribute was seventy-two. 38 36,000 cattle, of which the tribute for the LORD was 72;
The donkeys were thirty thousand five hundred; of which Yahweh's tribute was sixty-one. 39 30,500 donkeys, of which the tribute for the LORD was 61;
The persons were sixteen thousand; of whom Yahweh's tribute was thirty-two persons. 40 16,000 people, of which the tribute for the LORD was 32.
Moses gave the tribute, which was Yahweh's heave-offering, to Eleazar the priest, as Yahweh commanded Moses. 41 Moses gave the tribute to Eleazar the priest as the LORD's part, as the LORD commanded Moses.
Of the children of Israel's half, which Moses divided off from the men who warred 42 The half belonging to the Israelites, which Moses set apart from that of the fighting men--
(now the congregation's half was three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep, 43 the community's half--was 337,500 sheep,
and thirty-six thousand oxen, 44 36,000 cattle,
and thirty thousand five hundred donkeys, 45 30,500 donkeys
and sixteen thousand persons), 46 and 16,000 people.
even of the children of Israel's half, Moses took one drawn out of every fifty, both of man and of animal, and gave them to the Levites, who kept the charge of the tent of Yahweh; as Yahweh commanded Moses. 47 From the Israelites' half, Moses selected one out of every fifty persons and animals, as the LORD commanded him, and gave them to the Levites, who were responsible for the care of the LORD's tabernacle.
The officers who were over the thousands of the host, the captains of thousands, and the captains of hundreds, came near to Moses; 48 Then the officers who were over the units of the army--the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds--went to Moses
and they said to Moses, Your servants have taken the sum of the men of war who are under our charge, and there lacks not one man of us. 49 and said to him, "Your servants have counted the soldiers under our command, and not one is missing.
We have brought Yahweh's offering, what every man has gotten, of jewels of gold, ankle-chains, and bracelets, signet-rings, ear-rings, and armlets, to make atonement for our souls before Yahweh. 50 So we have brought as an offering to the LORD the gold articles each of us acquired--armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings and necklaces--to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD."
Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of them, even all worked jewels. 51 Moses and Eleazar the priest accepted from them the gold--all the crafted articles.
All the gold of the heave-offering that they offered up to Yahweh, of the captains of thousands, and of the captains of hundreds, was sixteen thousand seven hundred fifty shekels. 52 All the gold from the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds that Moses and Eleazar presented as a gift to the LORD weighed 16,750 shekels.
([For] the men of war had taken booty, every man for himself.) 53 Each soldier had taken plunder for himself.
Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the tent of meeting, for a memorial for the children of Israel before Yahweh. 54 Moses and Eleazar the priest accepted the gold from the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds and brought it into the Tent of Meeting as a memorial for the Israelites before the LORD.
