The Proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father; but a foolish son is the grief of his mother. 1 The proverbs of Solomon: A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son grief to his mother.
Treasures of wickedness profit nothing; but righteousness delivereth from death. 2 Ill-gotten treasures are of no value, but righteousness delivers from death.
Jehovah suffereth not the soul of the righteous [man] to famish; but he repelleth the craving of the wicked. 3 The LORD does not let the righteous go hungry but he thwarts the craving of the wicked.
He cometh to want that dealeth with a slack hand; but the hand of the diligent maketh rich. 4 Lazy hands make a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealth.
He that gathereth in summer is a wise son; he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame. 5 He who gathers crops in summer is a wise son, but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son.
Blessings are upon the head of a righteous [man]; but the mouth of the wicked covereth violence. 6 Blessings crown the head of the righteous, but violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked.
The memory of the righteous [man] shall be blessed; but the name of the wicked shall rot. 7 The memory of the righteous will be a blessing, but the name of the wicked will rot.
The wise in heart receiveth commandments; but a prating fool shall fall. 8 The wise in heart accept commands, but a chattering fool comes to ruin.
He that walketh in integrity walketh securely; but he that perverteth his ways shall be known. 9 The man of integrity walks securely, but he who takes crooked paths will be found out.
He that winketh with the eye causeth grief, and a prating fool shall fall. 10 He who winks maliciously causes grief, and a chattering fool comes to ruin.
The mouth of a righteous [man] is a fountain of life; but the mouth of the wicked covereth violence. 11 The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, but violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked.
Hatred stirreth up strifes; but love covereth all transgressions. 12 Hatred stirs up dissension, but love covers over all wrongs.
In the lips of an intelligent [man] wisdom is found; but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding. 13 Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning, but a rod is for the back of him who lacks judgment.
The wise lay up knowledge; but the mouth of the fool is near destruction. 14 Wise men store up knowledge, but the mouth of a fool invites ruin.
The rich man's wealth is his strong city; the destruction of the poor is their poverty. 15 The wealth of the rich is their fortified city, but poverty is the ruin of the poor.
The labour of a righteous [man] [tendeth] to life; the revenue of a wicked [man], to sin. 16 The wages of the righteous bring them life, but the income of the wicked brings them punishment.
Keeping instruction is the path to life; but he that forsaketh reproof goeth astray. 17 He who heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.
He that covereth hatred hath lying lips, and he that sendeth forth a slander is a fool. 18 He who conceals his hatred has lying lips, and whoever spreads slander is a fool.
In the multitude of words there wanteth not transgression; but he that restraineth his lips doeth wisely. 19 When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise.
The tongue of the righteous [man] is [as] choice silver; the heart of the wicked is little worth. 20 The tongue of the righteous is choice silver, but the heart of the wicked is of little value.
The lips of a righteous [man] feed many; but fools die for want of understanding. 21 The lips of the righteous nourish many, but fools die for lack of judgment.
The blessing of Jehovah, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow to it. 22 The blessing of the LORD brings wealth, and he adds no trouble to it.
It is as sport to a foolish [man] to do wickedness; but a man of understanding hath wisdom. 23 A fool finds pleasure in evil conduct, but a man of understanding delights in wisdom.
The fear of a wicked [man], it shall come upon him; but the desire of the righteous shall be granted. 24 What the wicked dreads will overtake him; what the righteous desire will be granted.
As a whirlwind passeth, so is the wicked no [more]; but the righteous is an everlasting foundation. 25 When the storm has swept by, the wicked are gone, but the righteous stand firm forever.
As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that send him. 26 As vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, so is a sluggard to those who send him.
The fear of Jehovah prolongeth days; but the years of the wicked shall be shortened. 27 The fear of the LORD adds length to life, but the years of the wicked are cut short.
The hope of the righteous is joy; but the expectation of the wicked shall perish. 28 The prospect of the righteous is joy, but the hopes of the wicked come to nothing.
The way of Jehovah is strength to the perfect [man], but destruction to the workers of iniquity. 29 The way of the LORD is a refuge for the righteous, but it is the ruin of those who do evil.
The righteous [man] shall never be moved; but the wicked shall not inhabit the land. 30 The righteous will never be uprooted, but the wicked will not remain in the land.
The mouth of a righteous [man] putteth forth wisdom; but the froward tongue shall be cut out. 31 The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom, but a perverse tongue will be cut out.
The lips of a righteous [man] know what is acceptable; but the mouth of the wicked is frowardness. 32 The lips of the righteous know what is fitting, but the mouth of the wicked only what is perverse.
