Holman Christian Standard (CSB) New International Version (NIV)
My son, don't forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commands; 1 My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart,
for they will bring you many days, a full life, and well-being. 2 for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity.
Never let loyalty and faithfulness leave you. Tie them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. 3 Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.
Then you will find favor and high regard in the sight of God and man. 4 Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
think about Him in all your ways, and He will guide you on the right paths. 6 in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
Don't consider yourself to be wise; fear the Lord and turn away from evil. 7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil.
This will be healing for your body and strengthening for your bones. 8 This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.
Honor the Lord with your possessions and with the first produce of your entire harvest; 9 Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops;
then your barns will be completely filled, and your vats will overflow with new wine. 10 then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.
Do not despise the Lord's instruction, my son, and do not loathe His discipline; 11 My son, do not despise the LORD's discipline and do not resent his rebuke,
for the Lord disciplines the one He loves, just as a father, the son he delights in. 12 because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.
Happy is a man who finds wisdom and who acquires understanding, 13 Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding,
for she is more profitable than silver, and her revenue is better than gold. 14 for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold.
She is more precious than jewels; nothing you desire compares with her. 15 She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.
Long life is in her right hand; in her left, riches and honor. 16 Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor.
Her ways are pleasant, and all her paths, peaceful. 17 Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace.
She is a tree of life to those who embrace her, and those who hold on to her are happy. 18 She is a tree of life to those who embrace her; those who lay hold of her will be blessed.
The Lord founded the earth by wisdom and established the heavens by understanding. 19 By wisdom the LORD laid the earth's foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place;
By His knowledge the watery depths broke open, and the clouds dripped with dew. 20 by his knowledge the deeps were divided, and the clouds let drop the dew.
Maintain [your] competence and discretion. My son, don't lose sight of them. 21 My son, preserve sound judgment and discernment, do not let them out of your sight;
They will be life for you and adornment for your neck. 22 they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck.
Then you will go safely on your way; your foot will not stumble. 23 Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble;
When you lie down, you will not be afraid; you will lie down, and your sleep will be pleasant. 24 when you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
Don't fear sudden danger or the ruin of the wicked when it comes, 25 Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked,
for the Lord will be your confidence and will keep your foot from a snare. 26 for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being snared.
When it is in your power, don't withhold good from the one to whom it is due. 27 Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act.
Don't say to your neighbor, "Go away! Come back later. I'll give it tomorrow"-when it is there with you. 28 Do not say to your neighbor, "Come back later; I'll give it tomorrow"-- when you now have it with you.
Don't plan any harm against your neighbor, for he trusts you and lives near you. 29 Do not plot harm against your neighbor, who lives trustfully near you.
Don't accuse anyone without cause, when he has done you no harm. 30 Do not accuse a man for no reason-- when he has done you no harm.
Don't envy a violent man or choose any of his ways; 31 Do not envy a violent man or choose any of his ways,
for the devious are detestable to the Lord, but He is a friend to the upright. 32 for the LORD detests a perverse man but takes the upright into his confidence.
The Lord's curse is on the household of the wicked, but He blesses the home of the righteous; 33 The LORD's curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the home of the righteous.
He mocks those who mock, but gives grace to the humble. 34 He mocks proud mockers but gives grace to the humble.
The wise will inherit honor, but He holds up fools to dishonor. 35 The wise inherit honor, but fools he holds up to shame.
