Good News Translation (GNT) New International Version (NIV)
My child, don't forget what I teach you. Always remember what I tell you to do. 1 My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart,
My teaching will give you a long and prosperous life. 2 for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity.
Never let go of loyalty and faithfulness. Tie them around your neck; write them on your heart. 3 Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.
If you do this, both God and people will be pleased with you. 4 Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Never rely on what you think you know. 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
Remember the Lord in everything you do, and he will show you the right way. 6 in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
Never let yourself think that you are wiser than you are; simply obey the Lord and refuse to do wrong. 7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil.
If you do, it will be like good medicine, healing your wounds and easing your pains. 8 This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.
Honor the Lord by making him an offering from the best of all that your land produces. 9 Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops;
If you do, your barns will be filled with grain, and you will have too much wine to store it all. 10 then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.
My child, when the Lord corrects you, pay close attention and take it as a warning. 11 My son, do not despise the LORD's discipline and do not resent his rebuke,
The Lord corrects those he loves, as parents correct a child of whom they are proud. 12 because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.
Happy is anyone who becomes wise - who comes to have understanding. 13 Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding,
There is more profit in it than there is in silver; it is worth more to you than gold. 14 for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold.
Wisdom is more valuable than jewels; nothing you could want can compare with it. 15 She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.
Wisdom offers you long life, as well as wealth and honor. 16 Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor.
Wisdom can make your life pleasant and lead you safely through it. 17 Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace.
Those who become wise are happy; wisdom will give them life. 18 She is a tree of life to those who embrace her; those who lay hold of her will be blessed.
The Lord created the earth by his wisdom; by his knowledge he set the sky in place. 19 By wisdom the LORD laid the earth's foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place;
His wisdom caused the rivers to flow and the clouds to give rain to the earth. 20 by his knowledge the deeps were divided, and the clouds let drop the dew.
My child, hold on to your wisdom and insight. Never let them get away from you. 21 My son, preserve sound judgment and discernment, do not let them out of your sight;
They will provide you with life - a pleasant and happy life. 22 they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck.
You can go safely on your way and never even stumble. 23 Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble;
You will not be afraid when you go to bed, and you will sleep soundly through the night. 24 when you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
You will not have to worry about sudden disasters, such as come on the wicked like a storm. 25 Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked,
The Lord will keep you safe. He will not let you fall into a trap. 26 for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being snared.
Whenever you possibly can, do good to those who need it. 27 Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act.
Never tell your neighbors to wait until tomorrow if you can help them now. 28 Do not say to your neighbor, "Come back later; I'll give it tomorrow"-- when you now have it with you.
Don't plan anything that will hurt your neighbors; they live beside you, trusting you. 29 Do not plot harm against your neighbor, who lives trustfully near you.
Don't argue with others for no reason when they have never done you any harm. 30 Do not accuse a man for no reason-- when he has done you no harm.
Don't be jealous of violent people or decide to act as they do, 31 Do not envy a violent man or choose any of his ways,
because the Lord hates people who do evil, but he takes righteous people into his confidence. 32 for the LORD detests a perverse man but takes the upright into his confidence.
The Lord puts a curse on the homes of the wicked, but blesses the homes of the righteous. 33 The LORD's curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the home of the righteous.
He has no use for conceited people, but shows favor to those who are humble. 34 He mocks proud mockers but gives grace to the humble.
Wise people will gain an honorable reputation, but stupid people will only add to their own disgrace. 35 The wise inherit honor, but fools he holds up to shame.
