The Message (MSG) New International Version (NIV)
Good friend, don't forget all I've taught you; take to heart my commands. 1 My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart,
They'll help you live a long, long time, a long life lived full and well. 2 for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity.
Don't lose your grip on Love and Loyalty. Tie them around your neck; carve their initials on your heart. 3 Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.
Earn a reputation for living well in God's eyes and the eyes of the people. 4 Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.
Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don't try to figure out everything on your own. 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
Listen for God's voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he's the one who will keep you on track. 6 in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
Don't assume that you know it all. Run to God! Run from evil! 7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil.
Your body will glow with health, your very bones will vibrate with life! 8 This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.
Honor God with everything you own; give him the first and the best. 9 Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops;
Your barns will burst, your wine vats will brim over. 10 then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.
But don't, dear friend, resent God's discipline; don't sulk under his loving correction. 11 My son, do not despise the LORD's discipline and do not resent his rebuke,
It's the child he loves that God corrects; a father's delight is behind all this. The Very Tree of Life 12 because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.
You're blessed when you meet Lady Wisdom, when you make friends with Madame Insight. 13 Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding,
She's worth far more than money in the bank; her friendship is better than a big salary. 14 for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold.
Her value exceeds all the trappings of wealth; nothing you could wish for holds a candle to her. 15 She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.
With one hand she gives long life, with the other she confers recognition. 16 Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor.
Her manner is beautiful, her life wonderfully complete. 17 Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace.
She's the very Tree of Life to those who embrace her. Hold her tight - and be blessed! 18 She is a tree of life to those who embrace her; those who lay hold of her will be blessed.
With Lady Wisdom, God formed Earth; with Madame Insight, he raised Heaven. 19 By wisdom the LORD laid the earth's foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place;
They knew when to signal rivers and springs to the surface, and dew to descend from the night skies. Never Walk Away 20 by his knowledge the deeps were divided, and the clouds let drop the dew.
Dear friend, guard Clear Thinking and Common Sense with your life; don't for a minute lose sight of them. 21 My son, preserve sound judgment and discernment, do not let them out of your sight;
They'll keep your soul alive and well, they'll keep you fit and attractive. 22 they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck.
You'll travel safely, you'll neither tire nor trip. 23 Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble;
You'll take afternoon naps without a worry, you'll enjoy a good night's sleep. 24 when you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
No need to panic over alarms or surprises, or predictions that doomsday's just around the corner, 25 Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked,
Because God will be right there with you; he'll keep you safe and sound. 26 for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being snared.
Never walk away from someone who deserves help; your hand is God's hand for that person. 27 Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act.
Don't tell your neighbor, "Maybe some other time," or, "Try me tomorrow," when the money's right there in your pocket. 28 Do not say to your neighbor, "Come back later; I'll give it tomorrow"-- when you now have it with you.
Don't figure ways of taking advantage of your neighbor when he's sitting there trusting and unsuspecting. 29 Do not plot harm against your neighbor, who lives trustfully near you.
Don't walk around with a chip on your shoulder, always spoiling for a fight. 30 Do not accuse a man for no reason-- when he has done you no harm.
Don't try to be like those who shoulder their way through life. Why be a bully? 31 Do not envy a violent man or choose any of his ways,
"Why not?" you say. Because God can't stand twisted souls. It's the straightforward who get his respect. 32 for the LORD detests a perverse man but takes the upright into his confidence.
God's curse blights the house of the wicked, but he blesses the home of the righteous. 33 The LORD's curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the home of the righteous.
He gives proud skeptics a cold shoulder, but if you're down on your luck, he's right there to help. 34 He mocks proud mockers but gives grace to the humble.
Wise living gets rewarded with honor; stupid living gets the booby prize. 35 The wise inherit honor, but fools he holds up to shame.
