For the leader. A psalm of David: ADONAI, you have probed me, and you know me. 1 O LORD, you have searched me and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I stand up, you discern my inclinations from afar, 2 You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.
you scrutinize my daily activities. You are so familiar with all my ways 3 You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.
that before I speak even a word, ADONAI, you know all about it already. 4 Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD.
You have hemmed me in both behind and in front and laid your hand on me. 5 You hem me in--behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me.
Such wonderful knowledge is beyond me, far too high for me to reach. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.
Where can I go to escape your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? 7 Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?
If I climb up to heaven, you are there; if I lie down in Sh'ol, you are there. 8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
If I fly away with the wings of the dawn and land beyond the sea, 9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea,
even there your hand would lead me, your right hand would hold me fast. 10 even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.
If I say, "Let darkness surround me, let the light around me be night," 11 If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,"
even darkness like this is not too dark for you; rather, night is as clear as day, darkness and light are the same. 12 even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.
For you fashioned my inmost being, you knit me together in my mother's womb. 13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb.
I thank you because I am awesomely made, wonderfully; your works are wonders -I know this very well. 14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
My bones were not hidden from you when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. 15 My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,
Your eyes could see me as an embryo, but in your book all my days were already written; my days had been shaped before any of them existed. 16 your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
God, how I prize your thoughts! How many of them there are! 17 How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!
If I count them, there are more than grains of sand; if I finish the count, I am still with you. 18 Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake, I am still with you.
God, if only you would kill off the wicked! Men of blood, get away from me! 19 If only you would slay the wicked, O God! Away from me, you bloodthirsty men!
They invoke your name for their crafty schemes; yes, your enemies misuse it. 20 They speak of you with evil intent; your adversaries misuse your name.
ADONAI, how I hate those who hate you! I feel such disgust with those who defy you! 21 Do I not hate those who hate you, O LORD, and abhor those who rise up against you?
I hate them with unlimited hatred! They have become my enemies too. 22 I have nothing but hatred for them; I count them my enemies.
Examine me, God, and know my heart; test me, and know my thoughts. 23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is in me any hurtful way, and lead me along the eternal way. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
