The Message (MSG) New International Version (NIV)
Blessed be God, my mountain, who trains me to fight fair and well. 1 Praise be to the LORD my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle.
He's the bedrock on which I stand, the castle in which I live, my rescuing knight, The high crag where I run for dear life, while he lays my enemies low. 2 He is my loving God and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield, in whom I take refuge, who subdues peoples under me.
I wonder why you care, God - why do you bother with us at all? 3 O LORD, what is man that you care for him, the son of man that you think of him?
All we are is a puff of air; we're like shadows in a campfire. 4 Man is like a breath; his days are like a fleeting shadow.
Step down out of heaven, God; ignite volcanoes in the hearts of the mountains. 5 Part your heavens, O LORD, and come down; touch the mountains, so that they smoke.
Hurl your lightnings in every direction; shoot your arrows this way and that. 6 Send forth lightning and scatter [the enemies]; shoot your arrows and rout them.
Reach all the way from sky to sea: pull me out of the ocean of hate, out of the grip of those barbarians 7 Reach down your hand from on high; deliver me and rescue me from the mighty waters, from the hands of foreigners
Who lie through their teeth, who shake your hand then knife you in the back. 8 whose mouths are full of lies, whose right hands are deceitful.
O God, let me sing a new song to you, let me play it on a twelve-string guitar - 9 I will sing a new song to you, O God; on the ten-stringed lyre I will make music to you,
A song to the God who saved the king, the God who rescued David, his servant. 10 to the One who gives victory to kings, who delivers his servant David from the deadly sword.
Rescue me from the enemy sword, release me from the grip of those barbarians Who lie through their teeth, who shake your hand then knife you in the back. 11 Deliver me and rescue me from the hands of foreigners whose mouths are full of lies, whose right hands are deceitful.
Make our sons in their prime like sturdy oak trees, Our daughters as shapely and bright as fields of wildflowers. 12 Then our sons in their youth will be like well-nurtured plants, and our daughters will be like pillars carved to adorn a palace.
Fill our barns with great harvest, fill our fields with huge flocks; 13 Our barns will be filled with every kind of provision. Our sheep will increase by thousands, by tens of thousands in our fields;
Protect us from invasion and exile - eliminate the crime in our streets. 14 our oxen will draw heavy loads. There will be no breaching of walls, no going into captivity, no cry of distress in our streets.
How blessed the people who have all this! How blessed the people who have God for God! 15 Blessed are the people of whom this is true; blessed are the people whose God is the LORD.
