The Message (MSG) New International Version (NIV)
Good people, cheer God! Right-living people sound best when praising. 1 Sing joyfully to the LORD, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise him.
Use guitars to reinforce your Hallelujahs! Play his praise on a grand piano! 2 Praise the LORD with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.
Invent your own new song to him; give him a trumpet fanfare. 3 Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy.
For God's Word is solid to the core; everything he makes is sound inside and out. 4 For the word of the LORD is right and true; he is faithful in all he does.
He loves it when everything fits, when his world is in plumb-line true. Earth is drenched in God's affectionate satisfaction. 5 The LORD loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love.
The skies were made by God's command; he breathed the word and the stars popped out. 6 By the word of the LORD were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth.
He scooped Sea into his jug, put Ocean in his keg. 7 He gathers the waters of the sea into jars; he puts the deep into storehouses.
Earth-creatures, bow before God; world-dwellers - down on your knees! 8 Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the people of the world revere him.
Here's why: he spoke and there it was, in place the moment he said so. 9 For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.
God takes the wind out of Babel pretense, he shoots down the world's power-schemes. 10 The LORD foils the plans of the nations; he thwarts the purposes of the peoples.
God's plan for the world stands up, all his designs are made to last. 11 But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations.
Blessed is the country with God for God; blessed are the people he's put in his will. 12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people he chose for his inheritance.
From high in the skies God looks around, he sees all Adam's brood. 13 From heaven the LORD looks down and sees all mankind;
From where he sits he overlooks all us earth-dwellers. 14 from his dwelling place he watches all who live on earth--
He has shaped each person in turn; now he watches everything we do. 15 he who forms the hearts of all, who considers everything they do.
No king succeeds with a big army alone, no warrior wins by brute strength. 16 No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength.
Horsepower is not the answer; no one gets by on muscle alone. 17 A horse is a vain hope for deliverance; despite all its great strength it cannot save.
Watch this: God's eye is on those who respect him, the ones who are looking for his love. 18 But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love,
He's ready to come to their rescue in bad times; in lean times he keeps body and soul together. 19 to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine.
We're depending on God; he's everything we need. 20 We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield.
What's more, our hearts brim with joy since we've taken for our own his holy name. 21 In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name.
Love us, God, with all you've got - that's what we're depending on. 22 May your unfailing love rest upon us, O LORD, even as we put our hope in you.
