The Message (MSG) New International Version (NIV)
Dignify those who are down on their luck; you'll feel good - that's what God does. 1 Blessed is he who has regard for the weak; the LORD delivers him in times of trouble.
God looks after us all, makes us robust with life - Lucky to be in the land, we're free from enemy worries. 2 The LORD will protect him and preserve his life; he will bless him in the land and not surrender him to the desire of his foes.
Whenever we're sick and in bed, God becomes our nurse, nurses us back to health. 3 The LORD will sustain him on his sickbed and restore him from his bed of illness.
I said, "God, be gracious! Put me together again - my sins have torn me to pieces." 4 I said, "O LORD, have mercy on me; heal me, for I have sinned against you."
My enemies are wishing the worst for me; they make bets on what day I will die. 5 My enemies say of me in malice, "When will he die and his name perish?"
If someone comes to see me, he mouths empty platitudes, All the while gathering gossip about me to entertain the street-corner crowd. 6 Whenever one comes to see me, he speaks falsely, while his heart gathers slander; then he goes out and spreads it abroad.
These "friends" who hate me whisper slanders all over town. They form committees to plan misery for me. 7 All my enemies whisper together against me; they imagine the worst for me, saying,
The rumor goes out, "He's got some dirty, deadly disease. The doctors have given up on him." 8 "A vile disease has beset him; he will never get up from the place where he lies."
Even my best friend, the one I always told everything - he ate meals at my house all the time! - has bitten my hand. 9 Even my close friend, whom I trusted, he who shared my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.
God, give grace, get me up on my feet. I'll show them a thing or two. 10 But you, O LORD, have mercy on me; raise me up, that I may repay them.
Meanwhile, I'm sure you're on my side - no victory shouts yet from the enemy camp! 11 I know that you are pleased with me, for my enemy does not triumph over me.
You know me inside and out, you hold me together, you never fail to stand me tall in your presence so I can look you in the eye. 12 In my integrity you uphold me and set me in your presence forever.
Blessed is God, Israel's God, always, always, always. Yes. Yes. Yes. 13 Praise be to the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Amen and Amen.
