Holman Christian Standard (CSB) New International Version (NIV)
God is indeed good to Israel, to the pure in heart. 1 Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart.
But as for me, my feet almost slipped; my steps nearly went astray. 2 But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold.
For I envied the arrogant; I saw the prosperity of the wicked. 3 For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
They have an easy time until they die, and their bodies are well-fed. 4 They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong.
They are not in trouble like others; they are not afflicted like most people. 5 They are free from the burdens common to man; they are not plagued by human ills.
Therefore, pride is their necklace, and violence covers them like a garment. 6 Therefore pride is their necklace; they clothe themselves with violence.
Their eyes bulge out from fatness; the imaginations of their hearts run wild. 7 From their callous hearts comes iniquity; the evil conceits of their minds know no limits.
They mock, and they speak maliciously; they arrogantly threaten oppression. 8 They scoff, and speak with malice; in their arrogance they threaten oppression.
They set their mouths against heaven, and their tongues strut across the earth. 9 Their mouths lay claim to heaven, and their tongues take possession of the earth.
Therefore His people turn to them and drink in their overflowing waters. 10 Therefore their people turn to them and drink up waters in abundance.
They say, "How can God know? Does the Most High know everything?" 11 They say, "How can God know? Does the Most High have knowledge?"
Look at them-the wicked! They are always at ease, and they increase their wealth. 12 This is what the wicked are like-- always carefree, they increase in wealth.
Did I purify my heart and wash my hands in innocence for nothing? 13 Surely in vain have I kept my heart pure; in vain have I washed my hands in innocence.
For I am afflicted all day long, and punished every morning. 14 All day long I have been plagued; I have been punished every morning.
If I had decided to say these things [aloud], I would have betrayed Your people. 15 If I had said, "I will speak thus," I would have betrayed your children.
When I tried to understand all this, it seemed hopeless 16 When I tried to understand all this, it was oppressive to me
until I entered God's sanctuary. Then I understood their destiny. 17 till I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny.
Indeed You put them in slippery places; You make them fall into ruin. 18 Surely you place them on slippery ground; you cast them down to ruin.
How suddenly they become a desolation! They come to an end, swept away by terrors. 19 How suddenly are they destroyed, completely swept away by terrors!
Like one waking from a dream, Lord, when arising, You will despise their image. 20 As a dream when one awakes, so when you arise, O Lord, you will despise them as fantasies.
When I became embittered and my innermost being was wounded, 21 When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered,
I was a fool and didn't understand; I was an unthinking animal toward You. 22 I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you.
Yet I am always with You; You hold my right hand. 23 Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand.
You guide me with Your counsel, and afterwards You will take me up in glory. 24 You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory.
Whom do I have in heaven but You? And I desire nothing on earth but You. 25 Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.
My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart, my portion forever. 26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Those far from You will certainly perish; You destroy all who are unfaithful to You. 27 Those who are far from you will perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you.
But as for me, God's presence is my good. I have made the Lord God my refuge, so I can tell about all You do. 28 But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds.
