New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
The apostles were at the Mount of Olives when this happened, so they walked the half mile back to Jerusalem. 12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day's walk from the city.
Then they went to the upstairs room of the house where they were staying. Here is the list of those who were present: Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James (son of Alphaeus), Simon (the Zealot), and Judas (son of James). 13 When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James.
They all met together continually for prayer, along with Mary the mother of Jesus, several other women, and the brothers of Jesus. 14 They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.
During this time, on a day when about 120 believers were present, Peter stood up and addressed them as follows: 15 In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty)
"Brothers, it was necessary for the Scriptures to be fulfilled concerning Judas, who guided the Temple police to arrest Jesus. This was predicted long ago by the Holy Spirit, speaking through King David. 16 and said, "Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through the mouth of David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus--
Judas was one of us, chosen to share in the ministry with us." 17 he was one of our number and shared in this ministry."
(Judas bought a field with the money he received for his treachery, and falling there, he burst open, spilling out his intestines. 18 (With the reward he got for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out.
The news of his death spread rapidly among all the people of Jerusalem, and they gave the place the Aramaic name Akeldama, which means "Field of Blood.") 19 Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)
Peter continued, "This was predicted in the book of Psalms, where it says, 'Let his home become desolate, with no one living in it.' And again, 'Let his position be given to someone else.' " 20 "For," said Peter, "it is written in the book of Psalms, " 'May his place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in it,' and, " 'May another take his place of leadership.'
"So now we must choose another man to take Judas's place. It must be someone who has been with us all the time that we were with the Lord Jesus -- 21 Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,
from the time he was baptized by John until the day he was taken from us into heaven. Whoever is chosen will join us as a witness of Jesus' resurrection." 22 beginning from John's baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection."
So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. 23 So they proposed two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias.
Then they all prayed for the right man to be chosen. "O Lord," they said, "you know every heart. Show us which of these men you have chosen 24 Then they prayed, "Lord, you know everyone's heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen
as an apostle to replace Judas the traitor in this ministry, for he has deserted us and gone where he belongs." 25 to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs."
Then they cast lots, and in this way Matthias was chosen and became an apostle with the other eleven. 26 Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.
