New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
There was also a man named Ananias who, with his wife, Sapphira, sold some property. 1 Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property.
He brought part of the money to the apostles, but he claimed it was the full amount. His wife had agreed to this deception. 2 With his wife's full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles' feet.
Then Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart? You lied to the Holy Spirit, and you kept some of the money for yourself. 3 Then Peter said, "Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?
The property was yours to sell or not sell, as you wished. And after selling it, the money was yours to give away. How could you do a thing like this? You weren't lying to us but to God." 4 Didn't it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn't the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied to men but to God."
As soon as Ananias heard these words, he fell to the floor and died. Everyone who heard about it was terrified. 5 When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard what had happened.
Then some young men wrapped him in a sheet and took him out and buried him. 6 Then the young men came forward, wrapped up his body, and carried him out and buried him.
About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 7 About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.
Peter asked her, "Was this the price you and your husband received for your land?" "Yes," she replied, "that was the price." 8 Peter asked her, "Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?" "Yes," she said, "that is the price."
And Peter said, "How could the two of you even think of doing a thing like this -- conspiring together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Just outside that door are the young men who buried your husband, and they will carry you out, too." 9 Peter said to her, "How could you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also."
Instantly, she fell to the floor and died. When the young men came in and saw that she was dead, they carried her out and buried her beside her husband. 10 At that moment she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband.
