New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
Because the Teacher was wise, he taught the people everything he knew. He collected proverbs and classified them. 9 Not only was the Teacher wise, but also he imparted knowledge to the people. He pondered and searched out and set in order many proverbs.
Indeed, the Teacher taught the plain truth, and he did so in an interesting way. 10 The Teacher searched to find just the right words, and what he wrote was upright and true.
A wise teacher's words spur students to action and emphasize important truths. The collected sayings of the wise are like guidance from a shepherd. 11 The words of the wise are like goads, their collected sayings like firmly embedded nails--given by one Shepherd.
But, my child, be warned: There is no end of opinions ready to be expressed. Studying them can go on forever and become very exhausting! 12 Be warned, my son, of anything in addition to them. Of making many books there is no end, and much study wearies the body.
Here is my final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commands, for this is the duty of every person. 13 Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole [duty] of man.
God will judge us for everything we do, including every secret thing, whether good or bad. 14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.
