New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
"Here are some other instructions you must present to Israel: 1 "These are the laws you are to set before them:
"If you buy a Hebrew slave, he is to serve for only six years. Set him free in the seventh year, and he will owe you nothing for his freedom. 2 "If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you for six years. But in the seventh year, he shall go free, without paying anything.
If he was single when he became your slave and then married afterward, only he will go free in the seventh year. But if he was married before he became a slave, then his wife will be freed with him. 3 If he comes alone, he is to go free alone; but if he has a wife when he comes, she is to go with him.
"If his master gave him a wife while he was a slave, and they had sons or daughters, then the man will be free in the seventh year, but his wife and children will still belong to his master. 4 If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the woman and her children shall belong to her master, and only the man shall go free.
But the slave may plainly declare, 'I love my master, my wife, and my children. I would rather not go free.' 5 "But if the servant declares, 'I love my master and my wife and children and do not want to go free,'
If he does this, his master must present him before God. Then his master must take him to the door and publicly pierce his ear with an awl. After that, the slave will belong to his master forever. 6 then his master must take him before the judges. He shall take him to the door or the doorpost and pierce his ear with an awl. Then he will be his servant for life.
