When the child grew up, she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, and she took him as her son. She named him Moses, "because," she said, "I drew him out of the water." 10 When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh's daughter and he became her son. She named him Moses, saying, "I drew him out of the water."
One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to his people and saw their forced labor. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his kinsfolk. 11 One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to where his own people were and watched them at their hard labor. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his own people.
He looked this way and that, and seeing no one he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. 12 Glancing this way and that and seeing no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.
When he went out the next day, he saw two Hebrews fighting; and he said to the one who was in the wrong, "Why do you strike your fellow Hebrew?" 13 The next day he went out and saw two Hebrews fighting. He asked the one in the wrong, "Why are you hitting your fellow Hebrew?"
He answered, "Who made you a ruler and judge over us? Do you mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?" Then Moses was afraid and thought, "Surely the thing is known." 14 The man said, "Who made you ruler and judge over us? Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian?" Then Moses was afraid and thought, "What I did must have become known."
When Pharaoh heard of it, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from Pharaoh. He settled in the land of Midian, and sat down by a well. 15 When Pharaoh heard of this, he tried to kill Moses, but Moses fled from Pharaoh and went to live in Midian, where he sat down by a well.
The priest of Midian had seven daughters. They came to draw water, and filled the troughs to water their father's flock. 16 Now a priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came to draw water and fill the troughs to water their father's flock.
But some shepherds came and drove them away. Moses got up and came to their defense and watered their flock. 17 Some shepherds came along and drove them away, but Moses got up and came to their rescue and watered their flock.
When they returned to their father Reuel, he said, "How is it that you have come back so soon today?" 18 When the girls returned to Reuel their father, he asked them, "Why have you returned so early today?"
They said, "An Egyptian helped us against the shepherds; he even drew water for us and watered the flock." 19 They answered, "An Egyptian rescued us from the shepherds. He even drew water for us and watered the flock."
He said to his daughters, "Where is he? Why did you leave the man? Invite him to break bread." 20 "And where is he?" he asked his daughters. "Why did you leave him? Invite him to have something to eat."
