New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
The LORD told Moses, "Prepare two stone tablets like the first ones. I will write on them the same words that were on the tablets you smashed. 1 The LORD said to Moses, "Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones, and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke.
Be ready in the morning to come up Mount Sinai and present yourself to me there on the top of the mountain. 2 Be ready in the morning, and then come up on Mount Sinai. Present yourself to me there on top of the mountain.
No one else may come with you. In fact, no one is allowed anywhere on the mountain. Do not even let the flocks or herds graze near the mountain." 3 No one is to come with you or be seen anywhere on the mountain; not even the flocks and herds may graze in front of the mountain."
So Moses cut two tablets of stone like the first ones. Early in the morning he climbed Mount Sinai as the LORD had told him, carrying the two stone tablets in his hands. 4 So Moses chiseled out two stone tablets like the first ones and went up Mount Sinai early in the morning, as the LORD had commanded him; and he carried the two stone tablets in his hands.
Then the LORD came down in a pillar of cloud and called out his own name, "the LORD," as Moses stood there in his presence. 5 Then the LORD came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the LORD.
He passed in front of Moses and said, "I am the LORD, I am the LORD, the merciful and gracious God. I am slow to anger and rich in unfailing love and faithfulness. 6 And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, "The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness,
I show this unfailing love to many thousands by forgiving every kind of sin and rebellion. Even so I do not leave sin unpunished, but I punish the children for the sins of their parents to the third and fourth generations." 7 maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation."
Moses immediately fell to the ground and worshiped. 8 Moses bowed to the ground at once and worshiped.
And he said, "If it is true that I have found favor in your sight, O Lord, then please go with us. Yes, this is an unruly and stubborn people, but please pardon our iniquity and our sins. Accept us as your own special possession." 9 "O Lord, if I have found favor in your eyes," he said, "then let the Lord go with us. Although this is a stiff-necked people, forgive our wickedness and our sin, and take us as your inheritance."
The LORD replied, "All right. This is the covenant I am going to make with you. I will perform wonders that have never been done before anywhere in all the earth or in any nation. And all the people around you will see the power of the LORD -- the awesome power I will display through you. 10 Then the LORD said: "I am making a covenant with you. Before all your people I will do wonders never before done in any nation in all the world. The people you live among will see how awesome is the work that I, the LORD, will do for you.
Your responsibility is to obey all the commands I am giving you today. Then I will surely drive out all those who stand in your way -- the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. 11 Obey what I command you today. I will drive out before you the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.
"Be very careful never to make treaties with the people in the land where you are going. If you do, you soon will be following their evil ways. 12 Be careful not to make a treaty with those who live in the land where you are going, or they will be a snare among you.
Instead, you must break down their pagan altars, smash the sacred pillars they worship, and cut down their carved images. 13 Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones and cut down their Asherah poles.
You must worship no other gods, but only the LORD, for he is a God who is passionate about his relationship with you. 14 Do not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.
