Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, 'Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.'" 1 Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'Let my people go, so that they may hold a festival to me in the desert.' "
But Pharaoh said, "Who is the LORD, that I should heed his voice and let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, and moreover I will not let Israel go." 2 Pharaoh said, "Who is the LORD, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the LORD and I will not let Israel go."
Then they said, "The God of the Hebrews has met with us; let us go, we pray, a three days' journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice to the LORD our God, lest he fall upon us with pestilence or with the sword." 3 Then they said, "The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Now let us take a three-day journey into the desert to offer sacrifices to the LORD our God, or he may strike us with plagues or with the sword."
But the king of Egypt said to them, "Moses and Aaron, why do you take the people away from their work? Get to your burdens." 4 But the king of Egypt said, "Moses and Aaron, why are you taking the people away from their labor? Get back to your work!"
And Pharaoh said, "Behold, the people of the land are now many and you make them rest from their burdens!" 5 Then Pharaoh said, "Look, the people of the land are now numerous, and you are stopping them from working."
The same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters of the people and their foremen, 6 That same day Pharaoh gave this order to the slave drivers and foremen in charge of the people:
"You shall no longer give the people straw to make bricks, as heretofore; let them go and gather straw for themselves. 7 "You are no longer to supply the people with straw for making bricks; let them go and gather their own straw.
But the number of bricks which they made heretofore you shall lay upon them, you shall by no means lessen it; for they are idle; therefore they cry, 'Let us go and offer sacrifice to our God.' 8 But require them to make the same number of bricks as before; don't reduce the quota. They are lazy; that is why they are crying out, 'Let us go and sacrifice to our God.'
Let heavier work be laid upon the men that they may labor at it and pay no regard to lying words." 9 Make the work harder for the men so that they keep working and pay no attention to lies."
So the taskmasters and the foremen of the people went out and said to the people, "Thus says Pharaoh, 'I will not give you straw. 10 Then the slave drivers and the foremen went out and said to the people, "This is what Pharaoh says: 'I will not give you any more straw.
Go yourselves, get your straw wherever you can find it; but your work will not be lessened in the least.'" 11 Go and get your own straw wherever you can find it, but your work will not be reduced at all.' "
So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt, to gather stubble for straw. 12 So the people scattered all over Egypt to gather stubble to use for straw.
The taskmasters were urgent, saying, "Complete your work, your daily task, as when there was straw." 13 The slave drivers kept pressing them, saying, "Complete the work required of you for each day, just as when you had straw."
And the foremen of the people of Israel, whom Pharaoh's taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and were asked, "Why have you not done all your task of making bricks today, as hitherto?" 14 The Israelite foremen appointed by Pharaoh's slave drivers were beaten and were asked, "Why didn't you meet your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as before?"
Then the foremen of the people of Israel came and cried to Pharaoh, "Why do you deal thus with your servants? 15 Then the Israelite foremen went and appealed to Pharaoh: "Why have you treated your servants this way?
No straw is given to your servants, yet they say to us, 'Make bricks!' And behold, your servants are beaten; but the fault is in your own people." 16 Your servants are given no straw, yet we are told, 'Make bricks!' Your servants are being beaten, but the fault is with your own people."
But he said, "You are idle, you are idle; therefore you say, 'Let us go and sacrifice to the LORD.' 17 Pharaoh said, "Lazy, that's what you are--lazy! That is why you keep saying, 'Let us go and sacrifice to the LORD.'
Go now, and work; for no straw shall be given you, yet you shall deliver the same number of bricks." 18 Now get to work. You will not be given any straw, yet you must produce your full quota of bricks."
The foremen of the people of Israel saw that they were in evil plight, when they said, "You shall by no means lessen your daily number of bricks." 19 The Israelite foremen realized they were in trouble when they were told, "You are not to reduce the number of bricks required of you for each day."
They met Moses and Aaron, who were waiting for them, as they came forth from Pharaoh; 20 When they left Pharaoh, they found Moses and Aaron waiting to meet them,
and they said to them, "The LORD look upon you and judge, because you have made us offensive in the sight of Pharaoh and his servants, and have put a sword in their hand to kill us." 21 and they said, "May the LORD look upon you and judge you! You have made us a stench to Pharaoh and his officials and have put a sword in their hand to kill us."
