RHE

NIV

1 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying:
1 The word of the LORD came to me:
2 Son of man, put forth a riddle, and speak a parable to the house of Israel,
2 “Son of man, set forth an allegory and tell it to the Israelites as a parable.
3 And say: Thus saith the Lord God; A large eagle with great wings, long-limbed, full of feathers, and of variety, came to Libanus, and took away the marrow of the cedar.
3 Say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: A great eagle with powerful wings, long feathers and full plumage of varied colors came to Lebanon. Taking hold of the top of a cedar,
4 He cropped off the top of the twigs thereof: and carried it away into the land of Chanaan, and he set it in a city of merchants.
4 he broke off its topmost shoot and carried it away to a land of merchants, where he planted it in a city of traders.
5 And he took of the seed of the land, and put it in the ground for seed, that it might take a firm root over many waters: he planted it on the surface of the earth.
5 “ ‘He took one of the seedlings of the land and put it in fertile soil. He planted it like a willow by abundant water,
6 And it sprung up and grew into a spreading vine of low stature, and the branches thereof looked towards him: and the roots thereof were under him. So it became a vine, and grew into branches, and shot forth sprigs.
6 and it sprouted and became a low, spreading vine. Its branches turned toward him, but its roots remained under it. So it became a vine and produced branches and put out leafy boughs.
