Good News Translation (GNT) New International Version (NIV)
The Lord spoke to me 1 The word of the LORD came to me:
and said, "What is this proverb people keep repeating in the land of Israel? "The parents ate the sour grapes, But the children got the sour taste.' 2 "What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel: " 'The fathers eat sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge'?
"As surely as I am the living God," says the Sovereign Lord, "you will not repeat this proverb in Israel any more. 3 "As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, you will no longer quote this proverb in Israel.
The life of every person belongs to me, the life of the parent as well as that of the child. The person who sins is the one who will die. 4 For every living soul belongs to me, the father as well as the son--both alike belong to me. The soul who sins is the one who will die.
"Suppose there is a truly good man, righteous and honest. 5 "Suppose there is a righteous man who does what is just and right.
He doesn't worship the idols of the Israelites or eat the sacrifices offered at forbidden shrines. He doesn't seduce another man's wife or have intercourse with a woman during her period. 6 He does not eat at the mountain shrines or look to the idols of the house of Israel. He does not defile his neighbor's wife or lie with a woman during her period.
