1 Then another message came to me from the LORD:

1 The word of the LORD came to me:

2 "Why do you quote this proverb in the land of Israel: 'The parents have eaten sour grapes, but their children's mouths pucker at the taste'?
|
2 "What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel: " 'The fathers eat sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge'?
|
|
3 As surely as I live, says the Sovereign LORD, you will not say this proverb anymore in Israel.
|
3 "As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, you will no longer quote this proverb in Israel.
|
|
4 For all people are mine to judge -- both parents and children alike. And this is my rule: The person who sins will be the one who dies.
|
4 For every living soul belongs to me, the father as well as the son--both alike belong to me. The soul who sins is the one who will die.
|
|
5 "Suppose a certain man is just and does what is lawful and right,
|
5 "Suppose there is a righteous man who does what is just and right.
|
|
6 and he has not feasted in the mountains before Israel's idols or worshiped them. And suppose he does not commit adultery or have intercourse with a woman during her menstrual period.

6 He does not eat at the mountain shrines or look to the idols of the house of Israel. He does not defile his neighbor's wife or lie with a woman during her period.
