New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
The one who sins is the one who dies. The child will not be punished for the parent's sins, and the parent will not be punished for the child's sins. Righteous people will be rewarded for their own goodness, and wicked people will be punished for their own wickedness. 20 The soul who sins is the one who will die. The son will not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous man will be credited to him, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against him.
But if wicked people turn away from all their sins and begin to obey my laws and do what is just and right, they will surely live and not die. 21 "But if a wicked man turns away from all the sins he has committed and keeps all my decrees and does what is just and right, he will surely live; he will not die.
All their past sins will be forgotten, and they will live because of the righteous things they have done." 22 None of the offenses he has committed will be remembered against him. Because of the righteous things he has done, he will live.
"Do you think, asks the Sovereign LORD, that I like to see wicked people die? Of course not! I only want them to turn from their wicked ways and live. 23 Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign LORD. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live?
However, if righteous people turn to sinful ways and start acting like other sinners, should they be allowed to live? No, of course not! All their previous goodness will be forgotten, and they will die for their sins." 24 "But if a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits sin and does the same detestable things the wicked man does, will he live? None of the righteous things he has done will be remembered. Because of the unfaithfulness he is guilty of and because of the sins he has committed, he will die.
"Yet you say, 'The Lord isn't being just!' Listen to me, O people of Israel. Am I the one who is unjust, or is it you? 25 "Yet you say, 'The way of the Lord is not just.' Hear, O house of Israel: Is my way unjust? Is it not your ways that are unjust?
When righteous people turn from being good and start doing sinful things, they will die for it. Yes, they will die because of their sinful deeds. 26 If a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits sin, he will die for it; because of the sin he has committed he will die.
And if wicked people turn away from their wickedness, obey the law, and do what is just and right, they will save their lives. 27 But if a wicked man turns away from the wickedness he has committed and does what is just and right, he will save his life.
They will live, because after thinking it over, they decided to turn from their sins. Such people will not die. 28 Because he considers all the offenses he has committed and turns away from them, he will surely live; he will not die.
And yet the people of Israel keep saying, 'The Lord is unjust!' O people of Israel, it is you who are unjust, not I." 29 Yet the house of Israel says, 'The way of the Lord is not just.' Are my ways unjust, O house of Israel? Is it not your ways that are unjust?
"Therefore, I will judge each of you, O people of Israel, according to your actions, says the Sovereign LORD. Turn from your sins! Don't let them destroy you! 30 "Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you, each one according to his ways, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall.
