Tell me, you who desire to be under law, do you not hear the law? 21 Tell me, you who want to be under the law, are you not aware of what the law says?
For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave and one by a free woman. 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman and the other by the free woman.
But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, the son of the free woman through promise. 23 His son by the slave woman was born in the ordinary way; but his son by the free woman was born as the result of a promise.
Now this is an allegory: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. 24 These things may be taken figuratively, for the women represent two covenants. One covenant is from Mount Sinai and bears children who are to be slaves: This is Hagar.
Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. 25 Now Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present city of Jerusalem, because she is in slavery with her children.
But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother. 26 But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother.
For it is written, "Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear; break forth and shout, you who are not in travail; for the children of the desolate one are many more than the children of her that is married." 27 For it is written: "Be glad, O barren woman, who bears no children; break forth and cry aloud, you who have no labor pains; because more are the children of the desolate woman than of her who has a husband."
Now we, brethren, like Isaac, are children of promise. 28 Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise.
But as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so it is now. 29 At that time the son born in the ordinary way persecuted the son born by the power of the Spirit. It is the same now.
But what does the scripture say? "Cast out the slave and her son; for the son of the slave shall not inherit with the son of the free woman." 30 But what does the Scripture say? "Get rid of the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman's son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman's son."
So, brethren, we are not children of the slave but of the free woman. 31 Therefore, brothers, we are not children of the slave woman, but of the free woman.
