New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
At one time the whole world spoke a single language and used the same words. 1 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech.
As the people migrated eastward, they found a plain in the land of Babylonia and settled there. 2 As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.
They began to talk about construction projects. "Come," they said, "let's make great piles of burnt brick and collect natural asphalt to use as mortar. 3 They said to each other, "Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar.
Let's build a great city with a tower that reaches to the skies -- a monument to our greatness! This will bring us together and keep us from scattering all over the world." 4 Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth."
But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. 5 But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building.
"Look!" he said. "If they can accomplish this when they have just begun to take advantage of their common language and political unity, just think of what they will do later. Nothing will be impossible for them! 6 The LORD said, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.
Come, let's go down and give them different languages. Then they won't be able to understand each other." 7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other."
In that way, the LORD scattered them all over the earth; and that ended the building of the city. 8 So the LORD scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city.
That is why the city was called Babel, because it was there that the LORD confused the people by giving them many languages, thus scattering them across the earth. 9 That is why it was called Babel--because there the LORD confused the language of the whole world. From there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth.
