King James Version (KJV) New International Version (NIV)
After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying , Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward. 1 After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward."
And Abram said , Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus? 2 But Abram said, "O Sovereign LORD, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?"
And Abram said , Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir . 3 And Abram said, "You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir."
And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying , This shall not be thine heir ; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir . 4 Then the word of the LORD came to him: "This man will not be your heir, but a son coming from your own body will be your heir."
And he brought him forth abroad, and said , Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. 5 He took him outside and said, "Look up at the heavens and count the stars--if indeed you can count them." Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be."
And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness. 6 Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness.
And he said unto him, I am the LORD that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it. 7 He also said to him, "I am the LORD, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to take possession of it."
And he said , Lord GOD, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it ? 8 But Abram said, "O Sovereign LORD, how can I know that I will gain possession of it?"
And he said unto him, Take me an heifer of three years old , and a she goat of three years old , and a ram of three years old , and a turtledove, and a young pigeon. 9 So the LORD said to him, "Bring me a heifer, a goat and a ram, each three years old, along with a dove and a young pigeon."
And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he not. 10 Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other; the birds, however, he did not cut in half.
And when the fowls came down upon the carcases, Abram drove them away . 11 Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses, but Abram drove them away.
