Revised Standard Version (RSV) New International Version (NIV)
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
And God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. 3 And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.
And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.
God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day. 5 God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning--the first day.
And God said, "Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters." 6 And God said, "Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water."
