Good News Translation (GNT) New International Version (NIV)
Now the snake was the most cunning animal that the Lord God had made. The snake asked the woman, "Did God really tell you not to eat fruit from any tree in the garden?" 1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?"
"We may eat the fruit of any tree in the garden," the woman answered, 2 The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,
"except the tree in the middle of it. God told us not to eat the fruit of that tree or even touch it; if we do, we will die." 3 but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.' "
The snake replied, "That's not true; you will not die. 4 "You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman.
God said that because he knows that when you eat it, you will be like God and know what is good and what is bad." 5 "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."
The woman saw how beautiful the tree was and how good its fruit would be to eat, and she thought how wonderful it would be to become wise. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, and he also ate it. 6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.
