King James Version (KJV) New International Version (NIV)
In the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying , 10 On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Haggai:
Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Ask now the priests concerning the law, saying , 11 "This is what the LORD Almighty says: 'Ask the priests what the law says:
If one bear holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any meat, shall it be holy ? And the priests answered and said , No. 12 If a person carries consecrated meat in the fold of his garment, and that fold touches some bread or stew, some wine, oil or other food, does it become consecrated?' " The priests answered, "No."
Then said Haggai, If one that is unclean by a dead body touch any of these, shall it be unclean ? And the priests answered and said , It shall be unclean . 13 Then Haggai said, "If a person defiled by contact with a dead body touches one of these things, does it become defiled?" "Yes," the priests replied, "it becomes defiled."
Then answered Haggai, and said , So is this people, and so is this nation before me, saith the LORD; and so is every work of their hands; and that which they offer there is unclean. 14 Then Haggai said, " 'So it is with this people and this nation in my sight,' declares the LORD. 'Whatever they do and whatever they offer there is defiled.
