Now even the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly sanctuary. 1 Now the first covenant had regulations for worship and also an earthly sanctuary.
For a tent was prepared, the outer one, in which were the lampstand and the table and the bread of the Presence; it is called the Holy Place. 2 A tabernacle was set up. In its first room were the lampstand, the table and the consecrated bread; this was called the Holy Place.
Behind the second curtain stood a tent called the Holy of Holies, 3 Behind the second curtain was a room called the Most Holy Place,
having the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, which contained a golden urn holding the manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant; 4 which had the golden altar of incense and the gold-covered ark of the covenant. This ark contained the gold jar of manna, Aaron's staff that had budded, and the stone tablets of the covenant.
above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail. 5 Above the ark were the cherubim of the Glory, overshadowing the atonement cover. But we cannot discuss these things in detail now.
These preparations having thus been made, the priests go continually into the outer tent, performing their ritual duties; 6 When everything had been arranged like this, the priests entered regularly into the outer room to carry on their ministry.
but into the second only the high priest goes, and he but once a year, and not without taking blood which he offers for himself and for the errors of the people. 7 But only the high priest entered the inner room, and that only once a year, and never without blood, which he offered for himself and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance.
By this the Holy Spirit indicates that the way into the sanctuary is not yet opened as long as the outer tent is still standing 8 The Holy Spirit was showing by this that the way into the Most Holy Place had not yet been disclosed as long as the first tabernacle was still standing.
(which is symbolic for the present age). According to this arrangement, gifts and sacrifices are offered which cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper, 9 This is an illustration for the present time, indicating that the gifts and sacrifices being offered were not able to clear the conscience of the worshiper.
but deal only with food and drink and various ablutions, regulations for the body imposed until the time of reformation. 10 They are only a matter of food and drink and various ceremonial washings--external regulations applying until the time of the new order.
