New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
These visions concerning Judah and Jerusalem came to Isaiah son of Amoz during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah -- all kings of Judah. 1 The vision concerning Judah and Jerusalem that Isaiah son of Amoz saw during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.
Hear, O heavens! Listen, O earth! This is what the LORD says: "The children I raised and cared for have turned against me. 2 Hear, O heavens! Listen, O earth! For the LORD has spoken: "I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me.
Even the animals -- the donkey and the ox -- know their owner and appreciate his care, but not my people Israel. No matter what I do for them, they still do not understand." 3 The ox knows his master, the donkey his owner's manger, but Israel does not know, my people do not understand."
Oh, what a sinful nation they are! They are loaded down with a burden of guilt. They are evil and corrupt children who have turned away from the LORD. They have despised the Holy One of Israel, cutting themselves off from his help. 4 Ah, sinful nation, a people loaded with guilt, a brood of evildoers, children given to corruption! They have forsaken the LORD; they have spurned the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on him.
Why do you continue to invite punishment? Must you rebel forever? Your head is injured, and your heart is sick. 5 Why should you be beaten anymore? Why do you persist in rebellion? Your whole head is injured, your whole heart afflicted.
You are sick from head to foot -- covered with bruises, welts, and infected wounds -- without any ointments or bandages. 6 From the sole of your foot to the top of your head there is no soundness-- only wounds and welts and open sores, not cleansed or bandaged or soothed with oil.
Your country lies in ruins, and your cities are burned. As you watch, foreigners plunder your fields and destroy everything they see. 7 Your country is desolate, your cities burned with fire; your fields are being stripped by foreigners right before you, laid waste as when overthrown by strangers.
Jerusalem stands abandoned like a watchman's shelter in a vineyard or field after the harvest is over. It is as helpless as a city under siege. 8 The Daughter of Zion is left like a shelter in a vineyard, like a hut in a field of melons, like a city under siege.
If the LORD Almighty had not spared a few of us, we would have been wiped out as completely as Sodom and Gomorrah. 9 Unless the LORD Almighty had left us some survivors, we would have become like Sodom, we would have been like Gomorrah.
Listen to the LORD, you leaders of Israel! Listen to the law of our God, people of Israel. You act just like the rulers and people of Sodom and Gomorrah. 10 Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of Sodom; listen to the law of our God, you people of Gomorrah!
"I am sick of your sacrifices," says the LORD. "Don't bring me any more burnt offerings! I don't want the fat from your rams or other animals. I don't want to see the blood from your offerings of bulls and rams and goats. 11 "The multitude of your sacrifices-- what are they to me?" says the LORD. "I have more than enough of burnt offerings, of rams and the fat of fattened animals; I have no pleasure in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats.
Why do you keep parading through my courts with your worthless sacrifices? 12 When you come to appear before me, who has asked this of you, this trampling of my courts?
The incense you bring me is a stench in my nostrils! Your celebrations of the new moon and the Sabbath day, and your special days for fasting -- even your most pious meetings -- are all sinful and false. I want nothing more to do with them. 13 Stop bringing meaningless offerings! Your incense is detestable to me. New Moons, Sabbaths and convocations-- I cannot bear your evil assemblies.
I hate all your festivals and sacrifices. I cannot stand the sight of them! 14 Your New Moon festivals and your appointed feasts my soul hates. They have become a burden to me; I am weary of bearing them.
From now on, when you lift up your hands in prayer, I will refuse to look. Even though you offer many prayers, I will not listen. For your hands are covered with the blood of your innocent victims. 15 When you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide my eyes from you; even if you offer many prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are full of blood;
Wash yourselves and be clean! Let me no longer see your evil deeds. Give up your wicked ways. 16 wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight! Stop doing wrong,
Learn to do good. Seek justice. Help the oppressed. Defend the orphan. Fight for the rights of widows. 17 learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow.
"Come now, let us argue this out," says the LORD. "No matter how deep the stain of your sins, I can remove it. I can make you as clean as freshly fallen snow. Even if you are stained as red as crimson, I can make you as white as wool. 18 "Come now, let us reason together," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.
If you will only obey me and let me help you, then you will have plenty to eat. 19 If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the best from the land;
But if you keep turning away and refusing to listen, you will be destroyed by your enemies. I, the LORD, have spoken!" 20 but if you resist and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword." For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.
