The Lord says, "City of Babylon, go down and sit in the dirt. People of Babylon, sit on the ground. You are no longer the ruler. You will no longer be called tender or beautiful. 1 "Go down, sit in the dust, Virgin Daughter of Babylon; sit on the ground without a throne, Daughter of the Babylonians. No more will you be called tender or delicate.
You must use large stones to grind grain into flour. Remove your veil and your nice skirts. Uncover your legs and cross the rivers. 2 Take millstones and grind flour; take off your veil. Lift up your skirts, bare your legs, and wade through the streams.
People will see your nakedness; they will see your shame. I will punish you; I will punish every one of you." 3 Your nakedness will be exposed and your shame uncovered. I will take vengeance; I will spare no one."
Our Savior is named the Lord All-Powerful; he is the Holy One of Israel. 4 Our Redeemer--the LORD Almighty is his name-- is the Holy One of Israel.
"Babylon, sit in darkness and say nothing. You will no longer be called the queen of kingdoms. 5 "Sit in silence, go into darkness, Daughter of the Babylonians; no more will you be called queen of kingdoms.
I was angry with my people, so I rejected those who belonged to me. I gave them to you, but you showed them no mercy. You even made the old people work very hard. 6 I was angry with my people and desecrated my inheritance; I gave them into your hand, and you showed them no mercy. Even on the aged you laid a very heavy yoke.
