My brothers and sisters, do you with your acts of favoritism really believe in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ? 1 My brothers, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don't show favoritism.
For if a person with gold rings and in fine clothes comes into your assembly, and if a poor person in dirty clothes also comes in, 2 Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in shabby clothes also comes in.
and if you take notice of the one wearing the fine clothes and say, "Have a seat here, please," while to the one who is poor you say, "Stand there," or, "Sit at my feet," 3 If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, "Here's a good seat for you," but say to the poor man, "You stand there" or "Sit on the floor by my feet,"
have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts? 4 have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?
Listen, my beloved brothers and sisters. Has not God chosen the poor in the world to be rich in faith and to be heirs of the kingdom that he has promised to those who love him? 5 Listen, my dear brothers: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?
But you have dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich who oppress you? Is it not they who drag you into court? 6 But you have insulted the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court?
Is it not they who blaspheme the excellent name that was invoked over you? 7 Are they not the ones who are slandering the noble name of him to whom you belong?
You do well if you really fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." 8 If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, "Love your neighbor as yourself," you are doing right.
But if you show partiality, you commit sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 9 But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers.
For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.
For the one who said, "You shall not commit adultery," also said, "You shall not murder." Now if you do not commit adultery but if you murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. 11 For he who said, "Do not commit adultery," also said, "Do not murder." If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.
So speak and so act as those who are to be judged by the law of liberty. 12 Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom,
For judgment will be without mercy to anyone who has shown no mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment. 13 because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment!
