Revised Standard Version w/ Apocrypha (RSVA) New International Version (NIV)
My brethren, show no partiality as you hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. 1 My brothers, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don't show favoritism.
For if a man with gold rings and in fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, 2 Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in shabby clothes also comes in.
and you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, "Have a seat here, please," while you say to the poor man, "Stand there," or, "Sit at my feet," 3 If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, "Here's a good seat for you," but say to the poor man, "You stand there" or "Sit on the floor by my feet,"
have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts? 4 have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?
Listen, my beloved brethren. Has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which he has promised to those who love him? 5 Listen, my dear brothers: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?
But you have dishonored the poor man. Is it not the rich who oppress you, is it not they who drag you into court? 6 But you have insulted the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court?
Is it not they who blaspheme that honorable name which was invoked over you? 7 Are they not the ones who are slandering the noble name of him to whom you belong?
If you really fulfil the royal law, according to the scripture, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself," you do well. 8 If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, "Love your neighbor as yourself," you are doing right.
But if you show partiality, you commit sin, and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 9 But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers.
For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.
For he who said, "Do not commit adultery," said also, "Do not kill." If you do not commit adultery but do kill, you have become a transgressor of the law. 11 For he who said, "Do not commit adultery," also said, "Do not murder." If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.
So speak and so act as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty. 12 Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom,
For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy; yet mercy triumphs over judgment. 13 because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment!
