1 The word that came to Yirmeyahu concerning all the Yehudim who lived in the land of Mitzrayim, who lived at Migdol, and at Tachpanches, and at Mof, and in the country of Patros, saying,
1 This word came to Jeremiah concerning all the Jews living in Lower Egypt—in Migdol, Tahpanhes and Memphis—and in Upper Egypt:
2 Thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Yisra'el: You have seen all the evil that I have brought on Yerushalayim, and on all the cities of Yehudah; and, behold, this day they are a desolation, and no man dwells therein,
2 “This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: You saw the great disaster I brought on Jerusalem and on all the towns of Judah. Today they lie deserted and in ruins
3 because of their wickedness which they have committed to provoke me to anger, in that they went to burn incense, [and] to serve other gods, that they didn't know, neither they, nor you, nor your fathers.
3 because of the evil they have done. They aroused my anger by burning incense to and worshiping other gods that neither they nor you nor your ancestors ever knew.
4 However I sent to you all my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, saying, Oh, don't do this abominable thing that I hate.
4 Again and again I sent my servants the prophets, who said, ‘Do not do this detestable thing that I hate!’
5 But they didn't listen, nor inclined their ear to turn from their wickedness, to burn no incense to other gods.
5 But they did not listen or pay attention; they did not turn from their wickedness or stop burning incense to other gods.
6 Therefore my wrath and my anger was poured forth, and was kindled in the cities of Yehudah and in the streets of Yerushalayim; and they are wasted and desolate, as it is this day.
6 Therefore, my fierce anger was poured out; it raged against the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem and made them the desolate ruins they are today.
7 Therefore now thus says the LORD, the God Tzva'ot,, the God of Yisra'el: Why commit you [this] great evil against your own souls, to cut off from you man and woman, infant and suckling, out of the midst of Yehudah, to leave you none remaining;
7 “Now this is what the LORD God Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Why bring such great disaster on yourselves by cutting off from Judah the men and women, the children and infants, and so leave yourselves without a remnant?
8 in that you provoke me to anger with the works of your hands, burning incense to other gods in the land of Mitzrayim, where you are gone to sojourn; that you may be cut off, and that you may be a curse and a reproach among all the nations of the eretz?
8 Why arouse my anger with what your hands have made, burning incense to other gods in Egypt, where you have come to live? You will destroy yourselves and make yourselves a curse and an object of reproach among all the nations on earth.
9 Have you forgotten the wickedness of your fathers, and the wickedness of the kings of Yehudah, and the wickedness of their wives, and your own wickedness, and the wickedness of your wives which they committed in the land of Yehudah, and in the streets of Yerushalayim?
9 Have you forgotten the wickedness committed by your ancestors and by the kings and queens of Judah and the wickedness committed by you and your wives in the land of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem?
10 They are not humbled even to this day, neither have they feared, nor walked in my law, nor in my statutes, that I set before you and before your fathers.
10 To this day they have not humbled themselves or shown reverence, nor have they followed my law and the decrees I set before you and your ancestors.
11 Therefore thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Yisra'el: Behold, I will set my face against you for evil, even to cut off all Yehudah.
11 “Therefore this is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: I am determined to bring disaster on you and to destroy all Judah.
12 I will take the remnant of Yehudah, that have set their faces to go into the land of Mitzrayim to sojourn there, and they shall all be consumed; in the land of Mitzrayim shall they fall; they shall be consumed by the sword and by the famine; they shall die, from the least even to the greatest, by the sword and by the famine; and they shall be an object of horror, [and] an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach.
12 I will take away the remnant of Judah who were determined to go to Egypt to settle there. They will all perish in Egypt; they will fall by the sword or die from famine. From the least to the greatest, they will die by sword or famine. They will become a curse and an object of horror, a curse and an object of reproach.
13 For I will punish those who dwell in the land of Mitzrayim, as I have punished Yerushalayim, by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence;
13 I will punish those who live in Egypt with the sword, famine and plague, as I punished Jerusalem.
14 so that none of the remnant of Yehudah, who have gone into the land of Mitzrayim to sojourn there, shall escape or be left, to return into the land of Yehudah, to which they have a desire to return to dwell there: for none shall return save such as shall escape.
14 None of the remnant of Judah who have gone to live in Egypt will escape or survive to return to the land of Judah, to which they long to return and live; none will return except a few fugitives.”
15 Then all the men who knew that their wives burned incense to other gods, and all the women who stood by, a great assembly, even all the people who lived in the land of Mitzrayim, in Patros, answered Yirmeyahu, saying,
15 Then all the men who knew that their wives were burning incense to other gods, along with all the women who were present—a large assembly—and all the people living in Lower and Upper Egypt, said to Jeremiah,
16 As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of the LORD, we will not listen to you.
16 “We will not listen to the message you have spoken to us in the name of the LORD!
17 But we will certainly perform every word that is gone forth out of our mouth, to burn incense to the queen of the sky, and to pour out drink-offerings to her, as we have done, we and our fathers, our kings and our princes, in the cities of Yehudah, and in the streets of Yerushalayim; for then had we plenty of victuals, and were well, and saw no evil.
17 We will certainly do everything we said we would: We will burn incense to the Queen of Heaven and will pour out drink offerings to her just as we and our ancestors, our kings and our officials did in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. At that time we had plenty of food and were well off and suffered no harm.
18 But since we left off burning incense to the queen of the sky, and pouring out drink-offerings to her, we have wanted all things, and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine.
18 But ever since we stopped burning incense to the Queen of Heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have had nothing and have been perishing by sword and famine.”
19 When we burned incense to the queen of the sky, and poured out drink-offerings to her, did we make her cakes to worship her, and pour out drink-offerings to her, without our husbands?
19 The women added, “When we burned incense to the Queen of Heaven and poured out drink offerings to her, did not our husbands know that we were making cakes impressed with her image and pouring out drink offerings to her?”
20 Then Yirmeyahu said to all the people, to the men, and to the women, even to all the people who had given him who answer, saying,
20 Then Jeremiah said to all the people, both men and women, who were answering him,
21 The incense that you burned in the cities of Yehudah, and in the streets of Yerushalayim, you and your fathers, your kings and your princes, and the people of the land, didn't the LORD remember them, and didn't it come into his mind?
21 “Did not the LORD remember and call to mind the incense burned in the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem by you and your ancestors, your kings and your officials and the people of the land?
22 so that the LORD could no longer bear, because of the evil of your doings, and because of the abominations which you have committed; therefore is your land become a desolation, and an astonishment, and a curse, without inhabitant, as it is this day.
22 When the LORD could no longer endure your wicked actions and the detestable things you did, your land became a curse and a desolate waste without inhabitants, as it is today.
23 Because you have burned incense, and because you have sinned against the LORD, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD, nor walked in his law, nor in his statutes, nor in his testimonies; therefore this evil is happened to you, as it is this day.
23 Because you have burned incense and have sinned against the LORD and have not obeyed him or followed his law or his decrees or his stipulations, this disaster has come upon you, as you now see.”
24 Moreover Yirmeyahu said to all the people, and to all the women, Hear the word of the LORD, all Yehudah who are in the land of Mitzrayim:
24 Then Jeremiah said to all the people, including the women, “Hear the word of the LORD, all you people of Judah in Egypt.
25 Thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Yisra'el, saying, You and your wives have both spoken with your mouths, and with your hands have fulfilled it, saying, We will surely perform our vows that we have vowed, to burn incense to the queen of the sky, and to pour out drink-offerings to her: establish then your vows, and perform your vows.
25 This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: You and your wives have done what you said you would do when you promised, ‘We will certainly carry out the vows we made to burn incense and pour out drink offerings to the Queen of Heaven.’ “Go ahead then, do what you promised! Keep your vows!
26 Therefore hear the word of the LORD, all Yehudah who dwell in the land of Mitzrayim: Behold, I have sworn by my great name, says the LORD, that my name shall no more be named in the mouth of any man of Yehudah in all the land of Mitzrayim, saying, As the Lord GOD lives.
26 But hear the word of the LORD, all you Jews living in Egypt: ‘I swear by my great name,’ says the LORD, ‘that no one from Judah living anywhere in Egypt will ever again invoke my name or swear, “As surely as the Sovereign LORD lives.”
27 Behold, I watch over them for evil, and not for good; and all the men of Yehudah who are in the land of Mitzrayim shall be consumed by the sword and by the famine, until there be an end of them.
27 For I am watching over them for harm, not for good; the Jews in Egypt will perish by sword and famine until they are all destroyed.
28 Those who escape the sword shall return out of the land of Mitzrayim into the land of Yehudah, few in number; and all the remnant of Yehudah, who have gone into the land of Mitzrayim to sojourn there, shall know whose word shall stand, mine, or theirs.
28 Those who escape the sword and return to the land of Judah from Egypt will be very few. Then the whole remnant of Judah who came to live in Egypt will know whose word will stand—mine or theirs.
29 This shall be the sign to you, says the LORD, that I will punish you in this place, that you may know that my words shall surely stand against you for evil:
29 “ ‘This will be the sign to you that I will punish you in this place,’ declares the LORD, ‘so that you will know that my threats of harm against you will surely stand.’
30 Thus says the LORD, Behold, I will give Par`oh Hofra king of Mitzrayim into the hand of his enemies, and into the hand of those who seek his life; as I gave Tzidkiyahu king of Yehudah into the hand of Nevukhadretztzar king of Bavel, who was his enemy, and sought his life.
30 This is what the LORD says: ‘I am going to deliver Pharaoh Hophra king of Egypt into the hands of his enemies who want to kill him, just as I gave Zedekiah king of Judah into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the enemy who wanted to kill him.’ ”
