English Standard Version (ESV) New International Version (NIV)
No longer do I call you servants, for the servantdoes not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.
You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit--fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.
These things I command you, so that you will love one another. 17 This is my command: Love each other.
"If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 18 "If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.
If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.
Remember the word that I said to you: 'A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 20 Remember the words I spoke to you: 'No servant is greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also.
But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me. 21 They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the One who sent me.
If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. Now, however, they have no excuse for their sin.
Whoever hates me hates my Father also. 23 He who hates me hates my Father as well.
If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. 24 If I had not done among them what no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have seen these miracles, and yet they have hated both me and my Father.
But the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: 'They hated me without a cause.' 25 But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: 'They hated me without reason.'
