After Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the Kidron valley to a place where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered. 1 When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was an olive grove, and he and his disciples went into it.
Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, because Jesus often met there with his disciples. 2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.
So Judas brought a detachment of soldiers together with police from the chief priests and the Pharisees, and they came there with lanterns and torches and weapons. 3 So Judas came to the grove, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.
Then Jesus, knowing all that was to happen to him, came forward and asked them, "Whom are you looking for?" 4 Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, "Who is it you want?"
They answered, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus replied, "I am he." Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. 5 "Jesus of Nazareth," they replied. "I am he," Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.)
When Jesus said to them, "I am he," they stepped back and fell to the ground. 6 When Jesus said, "I am he," they drew back and fell to the ground.
Again he asked them, "Whom are you looking for?" And they said, "Jesus of Nazareth." 7 Again he asked them, "Who is it you want?" And they said, "Jesus of Nazareth."
Jesus answered, "I told you that I am he. So if you are looking for me, let these men go." 8 "I told you that I am he," Jesus answered. "If you are looking for me, then let these men go."
This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken, "I did not lose a single one of those whom you gave me." 9 This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: "I have not lost one of those you gave me."
Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it, struck the high priest's slave, and cut off his right ear. The slave's name was Malchus. 10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant's name was Malchus.)
Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword back into its sheath. Am I not to drink the cup that the Father has given me?" 11 Jesus commanded Peter, "Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?"
