And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?" 19 Now this was John's testimony when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was.
He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, "I am not the Christ." 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, "I am not the Christ. "
And they asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not.""Are you the Prophet?" And he answered, "No." 21 They asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No."
So they said to him, "Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" 22 Finally they said, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself ?"
He said, "I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way of the Lord,' as the prophet Isaiah said." 23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the desert, 'Make straight the way for the Lord.' "
(Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) 24 Now some Pharisees who had been sent
They asked him, "Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?" 25 questioned him, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?"
John answered them, "I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, 26 "I baptize with water," John replied, "but among you stands one you do not know.
even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie." 27 He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie."
These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing. 28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
