New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
Early Sunday morning, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance. 1 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.
She ran and found Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. She said, "They have taken the Lord's body out of the tomb, and I don't know where they have put him!" 2 So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!"
Peter and the other disciple ran to the tomb to see. 3 So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb.
The other disciple outran Peter and got there first. 4 Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.
He stooped and looked in and saw the linen cloth lying there, but he didn't go in. 5 He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in.
Then Simon Peter arrived and went inside. He also noticed the linen wrappings lying there, 6 Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there,
while the cloth that had covered Jesus' head was folded up and lying to the side. 7 as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus' head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen.
Then the other disciple also went in, and he saw and believed -- 8 Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed.
for until then they hadn't realized that the Scriptures said he would rise from the dead. 9 (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)
Then they went home. 10 Then the disciples went back to their homes,
Mary was standing outside the tomb crying, and as she wept, she stooped and looked in. 11 but Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb
She saw two white-robed angels sitting at the head and foot of the place where the body of Jesus had been lying. 12 and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus' body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.
"Why are you crying?" the angels asked her."Because they have taken away my Lord," she replied, "and I don't know where they have put him." 13 They asked her, "Woman, why are you crying?" "They have taken my Lord away," she said, "and I don't know where they have put him."
She glanced over her shoulder and saw someone standing behind her. It was Jesus, but she didn't recognize him. 14 At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.
"Why are you crying?" Jesus asked her. "Who are you looking for?" She thought he was the gardener. "Sir," she said, "if you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will go and get him." 15 "Woman," he said, "why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?" Thinking he was the gardener, she said, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him."
"Mary!" Jesus said. She turned toward him and exclaimed, "Teacher!" 16 Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, "Rabboni!" (which means Teacher).
"Don't cling to me," Jesus said, "for I haven't yet ascended to the Father. But go find my brothers and tell them that I am ascending to my Father and your Father, my God and your God." 17 Jesus said, "Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, 'I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.' "
Mary Magdalene found the disciples and told them, "I have seen the Lord!" Then she gave them his message. 18 Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: "I have seen the Lord!" And she told them that he had said these things to her.
That evening, on the first day of the week, the disciples were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them! "Peace be with you," he said. 19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!"
As he spoke, he held out his hands for them to see, and he showed them his side. They were filled with joy when they saw their Lord! 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.
He spoke to them again and said, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you." 21 Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you."
Then he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit.
If you forgive anyone's sins, they are forgiven. If you refuse to forgive them, they are unforgiven." 23 If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven."
