Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews; 1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council.
this man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, "Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him." 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, "Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him."
Jesus answered and said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God." 3 In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again."
Nicodemus said to Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born, can he?" 4 "How can a man be born when he is old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb to be born!"
Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 5 Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.
"That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.
"Do not be amazed that I said to you, 'You must be born again.' 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.'
"The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit." 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit."
Nicodemus said to Him, "How can these things be?" 9 "How can this be?" Nicodemus asked.
Jesus answered and said to him, "Are you the teacher of Israel and do not understand these things? 10 "You are Israel's teacher," said Jesus, "and do you not understand these things?
"Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know and testify of what we have seen, and you do not accept our testimony. 11 I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony.
"If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things?
"No one has ascended into heaven, but He who descended from heaven: the Son of Man. 13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven--the Son of Man.
"As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,
so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life. 15 that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.
"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
