After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. 1 Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias),
And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick. 2 and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the miraculous signs he had performed on the sick.
Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples. 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples.
Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand. 4 The Jewish Passover Feast was near.
Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, "Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?" 5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, "Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?"
He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do. 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.
Philip answered him, "Two hundred denarii would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little." 7 Philip answered him, "Eight months' wages would not buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!"
One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him, 8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, spoke up,
"There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?" 9 "Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?"
Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number. 10 Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." There was plenty of grass in that place, and the men sat down, about five thousand of them.
Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted. 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.
And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, "Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost." 12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, "Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted."
So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten. 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.
When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, "This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!" 14 After the people saw the miraculous sign that Jesus did, they began to say, "Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world."
Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself. 15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.
