New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
And a huge crowd kept following him wherever he went, because they saw his miracles as he healed the sick. 2 and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the miraculous signs he had performed on the sick.
Then Jesus went up into the hills and sat down with his disciples around him. 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples.
(It was nearly time for the annual Passover celebration.) 4 The Jewish Passover Feast was near.
Jesus soon saw a great crowd of people climbing the hill, looking for him. Turning to Philip, he asked, "Philip, where can we buy bread to feed all these people?" 5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, "Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?"
He was testing Philip, for he already knew what he was going to do. 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.
Philip replied, "It would take a small fortune to feed them!" 7 Philip answered him, "Eight months' wages would not buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!"
Then Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, spoke up. 8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, spoke up,
"There's a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish. But what good is that with this huge crowd?" 9 "Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?"
"Tell everyone to sit down," Jesus ordered. So all of them -- the men alone numbered five thousand -- sat down on the grassy slopes. 10 Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." There was plenty of grass in that place, and the men sat down, about five thousand of them.
Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks to God, and passed them out to the people. Afterward he did the same with the fish. And they all ate until they were full. 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.
"Now gather the leftovers," Jesus told his disciples, "so that nothing is wasted." 12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, "Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted."
