7 Meanwhile, the sailors said to each other, "Come on, let's cast lots so that we might learn who is to blame for this evil that's happening to us." They cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. 7 Then the sailors said to each other, "Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity." They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.
8 So they said to him, "Tell us, since you're the cause of this evil happening to us: What do you do and where are you from? What's your country and of what people are you?" 8 So they asked him, "Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?"
9 He said to them, "I'm a Hebrew. I worship the LORD, the God of heaven—who made the sea and the dry land." 9 He answered, "I am a Hebrew and I worship the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the land."
10 Then the men were terrified and said to him, "What have you done?" (The men knew that Jonah was fleeing from the LORD, because he had told them.) 10 This terrified them and they asked, "What have you done?" (They knew he was running away from the LORD, because he had already told them so.)
