"There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. 19 "There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day.
And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 20 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores
who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man's table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried, 22 "The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried.
and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. 23 In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side.
And he called out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.' 24 So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.'
But Abraham said, 'Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. 25 "But Abraham replied, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.
And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.' 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.'
And he said, 'Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house-- 27 "He answered, 'Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house,
for I have five brothers--so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.' 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.'
But Abraham said, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.' 29 "Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.'
And he said, 'No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.' 30 " 'No, father Abraham,' he said, 'but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.'
He said to him, 'If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.'" 31 "He said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.' "
