Now tell us -- is it right to pay taxes to the Roman government or not?" 22 Is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?"
He saw through their trickery and said, 23 He saw through their duplicity and said to them,
"Show me a Roman coin. Whose picture and title are stamped on it?" "Caesar's," they replied. 24 "Show me a denarius. Whose portrait and inscription are on it?"
"Well then," he said, "give to Caesar what belongs to him. But everything that belongs to God must be given to God." 25 "Caesar's," they replied. He said to them, "Then give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's."
So they failed to trap him in the presence of the people. Instead, they were amazed by his answer, and they were silenced. 26 They were unable to trap him in what he had said there in public. And astonished by his answer, they became silent.

They posed this question: "Teacher, Moses gave us a law that if a man dies, leaving a wife but no children, his brother should marry the widow and have a child who will be the brother's heir. 28 "Teacher," they said, "Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and have children for his brother.
Well, there were seven brothers. The oldest married and then died without children. 29 Now there were seven brothers. The first one married a woman and died childless.
His brother married the widow, but he also died. Still no children. 30 The second
And so it went, one after the other, until each of the seven had married her and died, leaving no children. 31 and then the third married her, and in the same way the seven died, leaving no children.
Finally, the woman died, too. 32 Finally, the woman died too.
