On a sabbath, while he was going through the grainfields, his disciples plucked and ate some heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands. 1 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to pick some heads of grain, rub them in their hands and eat the kernels.
But some of the Pharisees said, "Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the sabbath?" 2 Some of the Pharisees asked, "Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?"
And Jesus answered, "Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: 3 Jesus answered them, "Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?
how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with him?" 4 He entered the house of God, and taking the consecrated bread, he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions."
And he said to them, "The Son of man is lord of the sabbath." 5 Then Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."
On another sabbath, when he entered the synagogue and taught, a man was there whose right hand was withered. 6 On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled.
And the scribes and the Pharisees watched him, to see whether he would heal on the sabbath, so that they might find an accusation against him. 7 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath.
But he knew their thoughts, and he said to the man who had the withered hand, "Come and stand here." And he rose and stood there. 8 But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shriveled hand, "Get up and stand in front of everyone." So he got up and stood there.
And Jesus said to them, "I ask you, is it lawful on the sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?" 9 Then Jesus said to them, "I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?"
And he looked around on them all, and said to him, "Stretch out your hand." And he did so, and his hand was restored. 10 He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He did so, and his hand was completely restored.
But they were filled with fury and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus. 11 But they were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.
